3-1: M3s vs Glasgow University 3s (WD1) - 06/10/21

Midweek drama? We love it!

After a strong undefeated start to the season and on the back of a rained off fixture against Rottenrow, Western Lettings Hillhead were keen to keep up the momentum against Glasgow University 3s.  A win for Hillhead against the students would see them top the league so there was plenty at stake.  Glasgow University had earned a score draw against a strong Western side so were clearly going to be a strong opposition.

Hillhead had a very strong squad available with Steve Pollock making his eagerly anticipated first appearance of the season alongside new member George Smith and returning stalwart Andrew McGucken.  An experienced squad enhanced by youngsters Kyle Flockhart and Ronan McGeoch, as well as ex Glasgow University students Murray McVicar and Roberto Muscatelli.

The game got off to a very unfortunate start with keeper Muscatelli smashed on his knee after preventing a Uni goal after a defensive mishap.  It soon transpired that it was a particularly sore one with keeper Roberto no longer able to take part in the game.  Not perturbed by this early setback Hillhead quickly reshuffled electing to see out the match with 11 outfield players.  Initially both teams took some time to settle with the hockey frenetic at best, with glances of quality shown by the Hillhead men.  As the half progressed Hillhead began to pressurise the Uni goal more frequently, but were wasteful and lacked the required composure when it mattered and on the night came up against an inspired opposition goalkeeper.  With a strong subs bench Hillhead were able to maintain their intensity and continue to put Uni on the backfoot with chance after chance.  A deserved breakthrough was achieved late in the half with Gregor ‘Kante’ Chambers opening his account for the season.

Halftime : Hillhead 1 - 0 Glasgow Uni

The second half started as the first ended with Hillhead playing confident and high paced hockey against an energetic and fit University team.  Youngsters Kyle and Ronan were now growing in confidence and playing with a maturity beyond their years.  It was not a case of when Hillhead would score but rather how many such was their dominance.  Despite this superiority they continued to fail to convert the relentless pressure they had the students under with their keeper again pulling off some remarkable saves.  Not deterred, Hillhead’s perseverance was rewarded with a crucial second goal scored by the industrious Colin Melia.  With the game seemingly beyond them and with meagre scraps to work off in the attack the students threw caution to the wind and managed to get themselves back in the game, passing the ball into Hillhead’s unmanned, empty goal.  2-1 up and having dominated possession and all the stats that mattered other than goals for, this had the makings of a shocker for the home team.  The reality, however, was more dominance by the home side who played their best hockey in the remaining 15 minutes.  A third goal was forthcoming with the impressive Murray McVicar capping off another strong performance with a goal.

Final Score: Hillhead 3 - 1 Glasgow Uni
