Motivated, committed and passionate about both hockey and Hillhead Hockey Club. I grew up as a hornet and developed my game through Hillhead Junoir section, before joining the men's club at the age of 13 where I played as part of the Development team (7th XI) and the 2nd XI alongside some of Hillheads biggest legends. I left the hive at the age of 17 to join Edinburgh University, where I studied Civil Engineeing. After University I moved to Germany where I played hockey for SC Frankfurt 1880.
Since then I have returned to the nest and am proud to be back playing for Hilllhead 1st XI. I am also a current Scottish senior internationalist sponsored by Adidas Hockey.

    Membership Secretary

I am proud to have been President of Hillhead HC from 2015-2018 and look forward to continuing on the committee as Membership Secretary. Since joining in 1983, I have enjoyed playing and socialising in a club that encourages and facilitates performance development, values good sportsmanship and offers a family friendly environment.

On the playing side, I managed to clock up 19 seasons for the 1st XI, before finally retiring when we got promoted to NL2 in 2002. I have since enjoyed playing for all of our other teams, including our development team and our Vets. I was honoured to be selected for the Scotland Over 50s squad in 2008 and Over 60s squad in 2018.
Prior to joining Hillhead, I played for Edinburgh University and Strathclyde University (where I was selected for the Scottish Universities team). I had the benefit of learning to play at Banbridge HC, one of the top Irish clubs.

I have a strong interest in the development of players and helped to coach our juniors for 15 years, a very rewarding activity. I am particularly proud of introducing my three sons Andrew, Callum and Iain to hockey and have enjoyed seeing them develop and play for the club.

I acknowledge the tremendous efforts of the many members that have helped the club get to its current status. I have contributed to the management of the club through committee work and liaising with external stakeholders. Having previously held positions as President, team captain and club treasurer, as Membership Secretary I will continue to help Hillhead realise its ambitions in terms of performance and to be recognised as an attractive, reputable and respected club. In doing so, I will seek to ensure there is strong social cohesion within the club and to foster our relationships with our Ladies and Junior clubs, Woodend, other clubs, Scottish Hockey and other relevant organisations.

Started hockey 2003/04 with Inveross in Inverness after they invited me to make up numbers, we frequently played with a reduced team at that time in NL3 (I was there to make the numbers up) The opposition thought I was useful because of my fitness and enthusiasm, well for about 5 minutes anyway.

Played left wing, had a fantastic coach, Chris Smith who helped me immensely.

Came down to Glasgow 2011 to Hillheads August mixed tournament, was impressed by the friendliness of the club and the inclusion of vet players. Joined currently playing 6s either mid field or defence.

Played a variety of sports, handy judo player and wrestler, also love basketball. Handball, volleyball. Keen interest in strength and conditioning for sport hence the strange warm up routine and seek to improve on my fitness coaching qualifications.

Want to learn to ariel as I can see my style changing over the next few years due to a reoccurring injury.

Took up hockey at School in England after injuring my back playing rugby and ended up captaining school team. Played Northumberland U18 and U21. Went to uni in Edinburgh (HWU) and played first two years in Edinburgh Civil Service 2s, then in Y2 Grange 2s and 3s as most of my uni palls had moved there. Captained HWU indoors and outdoors played in a narrow loss to Edinburgh Uni Scottish in the cup final, losing on flicks. Threw my runners up medal over the back fence at Peffermill, still a bad loser.

Nearly 30 years ago was in 1st team squad at Brookland’s in English Div 2, but didn’t manage to keep a place in the squad for very long when we were promoted to Premier League. Used to be not very skilful but really fast - joined Hillhead for first time in my 30s overweight and unfit, not very skilful and not at all fast. Became President of club and club sponsor but the hassle of running the club led me to quit after a couple of years - played two seasons at GHK (scoring 8 goals against Hillhead:-) and then retired - Friend ran Helensburgh so I kept on getting asked to play via a knock on my door Sat AM. My son took hockey up and asked me to coach school team and that got me back into the game. Rejoined Hillhead for a few games 2015 and then captained 5th team to West 3 title 16/17. Captained 4th team who won West 2 title by 14 points in 2018/19.
