1-1: M3s vs Clydesdale 3s (WD1) - 11/09/21

Season opener ends with a frustrating draw and one that got away

The last time Hillhead Third XI played a competitive fixture was so long ago that the opposition that day evades the memory.  A frustrating lay off from the sport that unites so many.

Hillhead’s first league match was against the ever dependable and hard to beat Clydesdale away.  Hillhead scraped a squad together with debuts for ex Glasgow Uni players Murray McVicar and goalkeeper Roberto Muscatelli as well as Belgian recruit Damien Van Puyvelde.  There was also a return for Steven Frame who arguably served the longest ban in West District history.

The match was a close affair from the outset with Clydesdale having the better of the opening exchanges and Hillhead toiled in their search for cohesion and understanding.   Clydesdale took the early lead with a scrappy finish from yards out.  This was to be one of the few chances Clydesdale created as Hillhead found their hockey feet and Clydesdale picked up some cheap cards in the first half.  Despite their best efforts Hillhead were wasteful in attack and reverted to crash ball hockey when a more controlled build-up was called for.

Halftime: Clydesdale 1-0 Hillhead

The second half was more of the same with Hillhead grabbing a deserved equaliser and with Clydesdale further hindered by an unfortunate red card early in the second half.  This red card only outdone by a wonderful piece of sportsmanship by the ‘Dale owning up to a foot in the build-up to an awarded goal.  Hillhead relieved not to be a goal down again and with the extra man advantage looked to press home their numerical superiority but a combination of profligacy in front of goal, resolute defending and outstanding goalkeeping made this a frustrating end to the match.  Chance after chance came and went as the match simmered away with a share of the spoils.  Hillhead of course disappointed not to pick up all three points but satisfied with a point given the patchwork squad and the long lay off from playing.  Clydesdale earned their point and will prove a difficult opponent in adversity.

Fulltime: Clydesdale 1 – 1 Hillhead

A handful of the team then enjoyed some socialising in the freshly renovated clubhouse as we watched the remnants of the cricket season play out of the hallowed square at Titwood.

All in all a great day and lovely to be back amongst friends and foes.
