5-1: M3s vs Uddingston 2s (WD1) - 13/11/21

Hillhead hammer league contenders Uddingston

Hillhead faced high scoring, league contenders Uddingston at GHK in a top of the table clash.  Going into the match there was little to separate the teams with Uddingston prolific in front of goal whilst Hillhead has only conceded three goals all season and equally lethal in front of goal.  How to approach the game was the question.  Should Hillhead back their defensive record or should they roll the dice and try and outscore their opponents.  Wary of their attacking threat in the shape of ex International and set play expert Josh Cairns, Hillhead decided a good defensive foundation was the best way forward.

The match began quickly with Uddingston signalling their intent with a strong and positive opening five minutes.  Hillhead stood firm repelling several promising attacks.  From the outset it was clear that up high Uddingston would carry some weight.  Sticking to their gameplan Hillhead defended strongly and with good shape and limited Uddingston to scraps in the final third.  This patience was rewarded as Hillhead took the lead with Callum Boxall deflecting a powerful Alan Meikle pass into the roof of the net.  A cracking opener!  Relieved to be on the scoresheet Hillhead continued to grow in confidence and soon doubled their lead with Callum Boxall scoring an even better second this time deflecting the ball on his reverse into the roof of the net from a tight angle.  His individual skill almost overshadowed by an excellent team goal in the build up, moving from deep left defence all the way to right wing for the finishing touch.  A third goal was to follow soon after with the experienced and inspirational midfielder Andy MacLaine finishing calmly after more nice build up play.

Halftime: Hillhead 3 – 0 Uddingston

Despite being comfortable, Hillhead were only too aware that a goal for Uddingston would alter the mood of the game so set out to add a vital fourth.  These goals were duly delivered with two goals for James Prowse.  James finished brilliantly on both occasions finding space in a crammed circle to fire past the Uddingston keeper.  Five goals to the good Hillhead dropped their levels towards the end allowing Uddingston to score a consolation goal.  Disappointing to lose a clean sheet after such a strong team display but a deserved goal for opponents.

An intense and fiercely contested match the like of which the team crave.  The score line arguably harsh on Uddingston who did not give an inch and fought throughout.  We look forward to another battle on return trip.

Thanks to umpires Gordon Macintyre Kemp and Gerry McGuinness for their excellent officiating.

Fulltime: Hillhead 5 – 1 Uddingston
