Weekend Review - 21st September

Posted by Ewan Campbell on 25 September 2019

Injury, illness and unavailability marred what started as a promising weekend for Western Lettings Hillhead with only one win from seven matches. Huge thanks to the efforts of the captains and coaches to get seven teams and umpires out in unprecedented circumstances. Although at least the quiz was a belter - getting Social Saturdays off to a fantastic start. Thanks to Ronnie for creating another brilliant quiz and Wendy for helping with the scoring. It was a record turn out for a Hillhead quiz night with around 80 people in attendance.

A disappointing opening match in Dundee saw the 1st team lose 7-0 to Grove Menzieshill. The opening goal was one to forget for Hillhead as the Grove forward miscontrolled the ball into the Hornets' goal. New coach Alan Meikle would have been hoping for more from his side on the launch of the new season but injuries and unavailability definitely had an impact on proceedings with another three injuries added just after half time. This resulted in Alan dusting off his kit once more and joining Keith Joss and Mark Ralph as coaches who have had to play against Menzieshill...and it's always Menzieshill. Fatigue saw the half time scoreline of 2-0 stretch to 7-0 by full time and planning begins in earnest for Wildcats on the 28th.

The 2nd team also had a tough opening fixture against Grange 2s and succumbed to a 6-0 loss. Moving on...

The 3rd team picked up the only victory of the day for Hillhead with a fantastic 3-2 victory over Greenock 1s. Early reports were goals for Matt, Jack and Fraser however it turns out Matt got two and Jack was trying to nick a goal!

Gordon Macintyre-Kemp's 4th team succumbed to a 2-5 loss against GHK. Another side blighted by injury was boosted by bringing Iain Duke out of retirement (on the opening weekend of his retirement) however it was not enough to prevent GHK from securing three points. Dan Ebattson and GMK got a goal apiece and Phil Martin picked up MotM.

The 5s fell to Anchor 1s 6-2, Sam Currie picked up MotM and a goal while Clifford Martin got the other.

Graham Conkie's 6th team came close to defeating local rivals Western WIldcats in a thrilling 4-3 loss. Douglas Dando got himself a hattrick.

The Development Team travelled to Helensburgh and faced a stronger side than expected and lost 2-0. Great feedback regarding the performances of our youngsters though who are already showing signs of improvement.
