Weekend Review - 19th October

Posted by Ewan Campbell on 21 October 2019

Another fantastic weekend of hockey saw goals aplenty in the Scottish Premiership and Regional 1 competitions from Western Lettings Hillhead teams. THe 3s had a tougher time of it in their Regional 2 match though.

Western Lettings Hillhead 1s 2-2 Uddingston HC 1s - Scottish Premiership

Another week and another 2 goal deficit to make up. Uddingston started with a bang and picked up an early goal with the Uddingston forward finding the inside of the far post with a sweet strike from the far side of the circle. Not long later it was 2-0 to Uddingston and that is how the first half finished.

Hillhead rallied in the second half and goals from Andrew Black and John Reid pulled them back into the game. John Reid's was particularly unorthodox but it was great to see the former Hillhead junior finally make his return to the 1st team after a tricky period with injury since rejoining. The Hornets' pushed for the winning goal but unfortunately ran out of time this week.

Western Lettings Hillhead 2s 10-1 Kelburne 2s - Regional League 1

The 2s went into the game confident for a win, and after a high intensity warm up their heads were in the game.
From the whistle, phases of play were flowing a the 2s were playing some of the best hockey they could, resulting in a short corner where Sincy puts one in back post after a readjustment from a miss stop. Hillhead were on the front foot and they were keeping it that way, and after Jude crossed the ball across the D, Matt Carder dove in back post and slotted it in.

Kelburne hit back with a short corner goal to make it 2-1 but heads were not going down and some more silky hockey from the 2s got got them 3 more goal from Dom, Chris and Jude. Notably Dom’s slide deflection from before penalty spot.
Just before the half time whistle blew Chris got a ball to the knee which benched him for the rest of the game and, most likely, month.

The second half dipped in the quality of performance but not for the lack of trying. It didn’t stop the 2s putting away 5 more from Jude, Dom, Matt, Ben and Andrew Hilton. As the game ended out Hillhead were all over Kelburne with the majority of ball time and control of the game.

MotM was Matthew Carder for his excellent work up front.

Western Lettings Hillhead 3s 0-6 Edinburgh University 3s - Regional League 2

Another frustrating day for the 3s as we suffered a heavy defeat in the capital. The match was by no means as one-sided as the scoreline suggests it was but, nevertheless, the hosts deserved the win. There were spells of dominance from the visitors which should push the team on in the coming weeks. However, with so many key players out injured, it is not too surprising to see the team struggle in recent weeks.
