Weekend Review - 12th October

Watsonians 3 - 4 Western Lettings Hillhead - Scottish Premiership - Peffermill

This write up will not do the weekends match justice. It was one that you had to experience first hand. What a game! Despite having the same number of circle entries as the Edinburgh side, Western Lettings Hillhead 1st XI went into the half time break 2-0 down. Graeme Campbell kickstarted the comeback for the Hornets with an excellent drive across the top of the circle before finding the bottom corner of the Watsons goal. Ross Jamieson netted the equaliser not long after setting up a tense finale. With the momentum very much in their favour, Hillhead set about going for the win, pushing forward in numbers wave by wave. Daniel Hoare had perhaps his finest outing yet in a Hillhead shirt and set the tone from the back.

A Watson's goal against the run of play followed by a 10 minute yellow card for Hillhead changed everything. Suddenly, Watsonians were once again in the ascendancy and Hillhead needed something quick with only a dozen or so minutes remaining. George Anthony reacted fastest in a goalline scramble to net the Hornets third goal and the pressure was then on the Edinburgh side to hold on. Ross Jamieson got his second of the match and Hillhead's fourth with minutes to spare. The fight was fantastic from the ten men of Hillhead. The last two minutes felt like ten minutes waiting for the final whistle, especially under consistent Watsonians pressure. The West Enders held firm for their first win of the season - onwards and upwards from here on out.

Western Lettings Hillhead 2s 4 - 7 Inverleith 2s- Regional 1 - Old Anniesland

Andrew Sinclair's 2nd XI will be disappointed that despite scoring four goals, they shipped seven and lost the match.  A Craig Hilton hattrick was the highlight but unfortunately not enough to secure the win, Andy RIchardson got the other goal in the match for Hillhead. The squad was significantly different to normal due to availability at the start of the holidays however those that stepped up did well. Despite the loss, it is encouraging to see the depth of talent available at the club to make this a competitive match. The 2nd team now sit in 7th place and will be looking to pick up 3 points against Kelburne next weekend to make up some ground in the league.

Western Lettings Hillhead 3s 1 - 3 Glasgow University 2s - Regional 2 - Old Anniesland

Having faced runaway league leaders Uddingston 2s last weekend, up next was their closest challengers Glasgow University. Having lost a significant number of the squad to the 2s it was always going to be a challenge on Saturday. Captain Jonny Duke was typically upbeat following the match, recognising that the players stepping up two divisions played admirably and battled hard with the students. Dan Ebbatson got the goal for the threes. Next weeks opponents are Edinburgh University 3s who, like Hillhead, are still finding their feet this season.
