Weekend Preview - 16th and 17th November

Posted by Ewan Campbell on 15 November 2019

Following the cold snap last weekend Western Lettings Hillhead 1st team are hoping for a frost free weekend to see out the first half of this seasons Scottish Premiership. There are seven teams in action on Saturday and cup games follow on Sunday!

Western Lettings Hillhead 1s vs Grange 1s - 3pm @ Old Anniesland (Water) - Scottish Premiership

The 1st team welcome league leaders Grange to Old Anniesland in the final match of the Scottish Premiership before Christmas. The Edinburgh side have been in fine form so far this season with seven wins out of eight and no losses recorded. Last weekend they dispatched Grove Menzieshill 7-0 who currently sit third in the league.

Hillhead were not in action last weekend as the match against Edinburgh University was cancelled due to the cold weather. However, with a good training session on Tuesday and some high intensity dodgeball on Thursday - spirits are high in the Hornets camp.

Goals are guaranteed on Saturday so make sure and come on down to support the club.

Western Lettings Hillhead 2s vs Edinburgh University 2s - 2.30pm @ Peffermill - Regional League 1

Andrew Sinclair's 2nd team also face the top team in their division this weekend as the 2s travel East to face Edinburgh University in Regional League 1. The 2s have been a bit hit or miss so far this season and last weekends game was a prime example.

Despite dominating the opening exchanges and most of the match thereafter, the 2s were unable to find a second goal following Chris Wilson's opener which may have been enough to seal the victory. As it was, Clydesdale struck late in the game which set up a thrilling finale for the supporters. It was end to end hockey with both teams going for the win. Neither team was able to breach the defences of the other though - with the game ending 1-1.

Western Lettings Hillhead 3s vs Dunfermline Carnegie 2s - 12pm @ Woodmill - Regional League 2

The threes faced Dunfermline Carnegie just five days ago in a close run 2-1 defeat at Old Anniesland. Murray Ross got the goal for the threes last weekend. Jonny Duke's observation of the days play was that either team could and perhaps should have scored four or five goals each but it wasn't to be.

Dunfermline currently sit in 2nd place behind league leaders Uddingston and will be looking to keep the pressure up as we head towards Christmas. Hillhead could move to 3rd place in the league with a victory and results going their way elsewhere.

Western Lettings 4s vs Anchor - 12pm @ Linwood - West District Division 2

Hillhead 4s currently sit in third place in West District 2, with GHK and Giffnock 1st teams currently three points ahead. At least one of them will drop points this weekend so it is an excellent opportunity for GMK's men to move into a powerful position with just a few games to play before Christmas. Bearing in mind that the 4s face Giffnock on the 7th of December.

Last weekend saw the 4s defeat Uddingston 4s 3-1 with a bit more to give. Vijay Trivedy got two while GMK got one. Anchor have shown that they can score goals as their earlier results prove, however they are goalless in their last two outings.

Western Lettings Hillhead 5s vs Rottenrow 2s - 12pm @ Glasgow Green - West District Division 2

The 5s are currently two places behind Rottenrow in the league and have an opportunity to close the gap this weekend. Last weekend saw Andy Macey's side fall to a 4-3 defeat against Clydesdale. The 5s were 3-2 down at half time but couldn't quite pull off the recovery this time.

Western Lettings 6s vs Western 4s - 3.30pm @ Auchenhowie - West District Division 3 North

Graham Conkie's 6th team face the league leaders Western Wildcats 4s on Saturday. As it stands the Milngavie side have won five out of five and the 6s will have to be at their best to breach the Wildcats defence who have only conceded two goals so far this season. Interestingly - the only two sides to score against Western are the sixes themselves and the Hillhead development team although both singles were in heavy defeats...

This weekend will be a gauge of how the 6s have improved since the opening game of the season. Good luck!

Western Lettings Development Squad (7s) vs Stepps 2s - 12.30pm @ Old Anniesland (Sand) - West District Division 3 North

The Development Squad had a baptism of fire against a strong Stepps 2s side on the opening day of the season but have made great strides since then. The youngsters continue to go from strength to strength and were unlucky not to secure their first three points of the season last weekend against Western 5s. Ronan McGeoch got the goal and will be eager to get more while Aaron Drummond put in a fantastic performance at left back.

As the side plays more together and gets used to the speed of adult hockey there has been a massive improvement from all the boys. Our continuing gratefulness goes to the adults in the side for providing a platform for the boys to develop and perform, and to the coaches who put in the hours every week at training to improve their skills and knowledge of the game. It is worth remembering that this must be one of the youngest Development Squads that Hillhead has ever fielded.

Western Lettings Hillhead 1s vs Glasgow University 1s - 10.30am @ Old Anniesland - Scottish Cup

It's an early start for the 1s on Sunday as they welcome the Glasgow University 1st team to Old Anniesland. There is a full squad available and Hillhead will be hoping to put in a good performance and progress to the next round. Cup fixtures are always tricky and the students will be looking to pull off an early round upset on Sunday morning.

Western Lettings Hillhead 2s vs Granite City Wanderers 2s - 3pm @ Rubislaw - District Cup

The 2s face the long road up to Aberdeen to face Granite City Wanderers in the District Cup. A win here would move them into the last 16 of the competition.

Western Lettings Hillhead 3s vs Watsonians 4s - 4.30pm @ Old Anniesland - Reserve Cup

The last fixture of the weekend sees the 3s face Watsonians 4s in the Reserve Cup. Jonny Duke has assembled a strong side as they look to move into the next round.
