Scottish Cup Success - 21st November

Posted by Ewan Campbell on 22 November 2019

A frozen pitch on Sunday resulted in Western Lettings Hillhead's opening fixture in the Scottish Cup being delayed until last night. Following a tense opening salvo, the 1st team settled into a bit of rhythm and started to pressurise the students' backline. As Hillhead midfielders stepped through and intercepted passes from the GU defence, the West End side were able to capitalise on the game in transition and get to the GU baseline resulting in a number of opportunities for the Hillhead forwards.

Finn Harkin got the opening goal with a tap in from this exact situation, a second very nearly followed as Andrew Black found the back of the net although the umpire quickly spotted that he had used his chest to bundle the ball over the line. No VAR required here.

Adam Carmichael showed his versatility last night, operating through all three lines of the pitch, and was rewarded with a goal of his own with another tap in for Hillhead!

Last night also saw the 1st team debut of another Hillhead youngster Ronan McGeoch, normally found honing his skills for the Development Squad he was due to make his first appearance on Sunday, but with the match being cancelled Jonny Duke saw an opportunity to play him in the 3s. Two goals for the 3s ensured him a place in last nights game and he gave a good account of himself once again. Following a Callum Duke breakaway, he was able to get himself into a good position and forced a save from the GU keeper with a low reverse.

The second half saw the game open up and turnovers from both sides become more prevalent, Jamie Frail was called upon to make a couple of saves from short corners and Hillhead squandered a couple of easy opportunities where the final pass didn't quite make it.

Rounding off the scoring for the night was Ross Jamieson, who swept the ball into an empty net after Jude Boslem squared the ball past the keeper.

Overall, plenty of positives but also plenty to work on as Western Lettings Hillhead progress into the last 8 of the Scottish Cup.
