Records roll as Hillhead beat Grange
With the season all but finished for AMN Hillhead having performed a houdini act after the christmas break tto avoid what looked like an inevitable play-off. Grange on the other hand, were preparing for the European 'C' division next month, so a good performance was paramount.
Hillhead were still smarting from an abandoned fixture in March in which their 3-2 lead was in vein as fog spoiled the party, with the match abandoned after 45 minutes. Moreover they had a point to prove having capitulated to Grange 11-2 early in the season.
With regulars Steve Pollock, Shane Boyce, Alan Meikle, Matt McIntyre and Jamie Frail unavailable due to a combination of ill health and work commitments, tonight's match was an opportunity for coach Joss to try out some younger players notably James Ross and Rory Kerr at the highest level.
In a closely contested match in which both sides squandered chances Hillhead prevailed with an outstanding 3-2 victory thanks to an Andrew Duke brace and a goal from Wei Adams. This result heralded Hillhead's finest ever victory in NL1, having never beaten a top two side since promotion to the top flight. It was also the first time Hillhead had ever beaten Grange in NL! both indoor and outdoor, the only club Hillhead had never beaten at the top level in either indoor or outdoor. And to top it all Hillhead moved up a place to seventh in NL1, a remarkable feat given their predicament at the turn of the yeay.
