National League Roundup 29th and 30th September

Posted by Ewan Campbell on 3 October 2018

Saturday saw Hillhead produce a clinical display in front of goal against Aberdeen. Words from Ewan Campbell (GK).

After the September weekend break, Hillhead got themselves off to winning ways with an impressive 11-0 win over Gordonians at Old Anniesland. Michael Sherry kicked off the scoring just 3 minutes in with a superb drag flick into the bottom right corner of the goal and Hillhead carried this momentum through the half with goalkeeper Jamie frail not having to make a save in the first half. Goals came from Fraser Ward, Callum Duke and Graeme Campbell scoring to give Hillhead a 4-0 half time lead.

The second half was no different with Hillhead keeping their foot on the gas and the goals continued to follow with Graeme Campbell adding another 4 to his tally in the second half as well as a deflected effort from Adam Carmichael to keep Hillhead out in front. Gordonians did have their chances calling for goalkeeper Ewan Campbell to be sprung into action. Their best chance being a penalty flick given away by Campbell but fortunately he redeemed himself with an excellent save and renowned Ric Flair celebration to keep the clean sheet alive. Hillhead stuck in til the end with callum Duke scoring another and Stuart Allen making a journey up from defence to knock in Hillheads 11th goal of the game.

Sunday saw the 1st XI travel east to take on Watsonians at Meggetland, eager to secure a 6 point weekend. Iain Duke provides his analysis of the match.

After a strong performance against Aberdeen on Saturday, Hillhead were looking to repeat their form away to Watsonians to make it a 6 pointer weekend. This presented a fantastic opportunity for Hillhead to make a statement to the rest of the league about their intentions this year.  However, perhaps feeling some fatigue from the day before, the home side were first to make an impression on the game as Watsonians took the lead after catching Hillhead flat footed. It took a while for the away side to build their way into the game and find their feet, but after fighting their way back, Ruari Thomson equalised for the visitors to make it 1-1 moving into half time.

In a closely contested game, it appeared no one would make a break through to claim all three points, but with only 15 minutes left on the clock, the home side again took the initiative to make it 2-1. Things were looking tough for Hillhead, with an extremely dry pitch from poorly functioning canons which hindered the desired style of hockey, misery was compounded as they suffered yellow cards to fine players - club captain Callum Duke and youngster Jude Boslem. Determined to maintain an undefeated start to the season, Hillhead rallied on, and spurred on by a notable performance by Copenhagen bound David Gay, Ewan Campbell -  after seeing his brother score 5 against Aberdeen - equalised with just a few minutes left on the clock to clinch what turned out to be a fruitful and precious point for both sides.
