Hillhead Best in the West

During a season full of twists and turns the destiny of the West District Division One crown was well and truly in Hillhead's control.  A win against fifth placed Strathclyde Unviersity away at Millerston would seal the Hillhead men an historic first Division One title.  Anything less than three points would see South Ayrshire side Anchor win the league outright, a side that went through the seasons with only two defeats.

In front of a large Hillhead travelling support, boasting junior, female and male members, the stage was set for a thrilling end to a rollercoaster season.  Going into their final match Hillhead had only lost seven points with one defeat and two draws, a remarkable feat by any measures.

The first half of the match was a rather nervy affair with Hillhead just about on top in the first half, despite a lacklustre attacking display.  It was no surprise that Hillhead's first goal came at a set play, as Strathclyde's defence had offered Hillhead very few sights at goal from open play.  The goal was scored by Hillhead playmaker Johnny Horne with a fierce and well placed drag flick.

Halftime       Strathclyde University    0    -      1      Hillhead

The second half was a lot better from the champions elect as they completely dominated proceedings, with their first half nerves seemingly banished.  The performance grew from strength to strength as the outstanding Hillhead defence of McKinney, Downes, Lennox and Kalsi produced one of the most composed and error free performances witnessed in recent memory.  Hillhead's dominance produced two more goals with the outstanding junior Jed Lennox scoring after a 30 yard run and shot.  Another junior product, Jamie Gillies, came good late to seal the deal with a neat finish from close range.  An outstanding team performance in which every individual gave their all.  Not one individual could be singled out for praise as over the course of the match and indeed the season all involved were superb.  An achievement unsurpassed in Hillhead Men's hockey history.  Congratulations to captain Nick Downes.

Full time    Strathclyde    0    -     3     Hillhead

Thanks to Alan MacFarlane (umpiring), the Hillhead Committee and sponsor John Candlin (AMN Contracts) for supporting the boys throughout the season.

Congratulations also to Anchor for a tremendous season and terrific grace and sportsmanship throughout.  A credit to the league and your club.
