Dale or no Dale!

It would be fair to say that AMN Hillhead Mens 1's went into this Arthur McKay Scottish Cup game, against Greaves Clydesdale 1's, with one intention and one intention only, to start getting back to the winning ways they've missed so much in recent times. And whilst there was maybe some angst amongst the players, due to the league season so far, going into this cup fixture - right from the start it didn't show!

And after only about five minutes there was already a feelgood factor about the way Hillhead were playing; everybody was eager for the ball, everybody was making fantastic runs off the ball and into space - the team was driving forward with a winning mentality and looking for those vital goals.

Clydesdale weren't messing about either, and whilst they might have had slightly more possession for certainly the first 20 minutes or so, they couldn't make sure of anything, with three good chances missed. At the end of the day however, Hillhead were solid throughout and super fast on every attacking opportunity.

Graeme Campbell was immense as he drove forward looking for any sensible run made by his colleagues further up. Campbell's speed, and stick skills, are a joy to watch, and although the man can do tricks with a ball that would deceive even the eyes of a well trained hawk, he rarely tries anything fancy. He always keeps it on his strong side and looks to make that immediate telling pass. And he wasn't alone. His ethos of simple, direct hockey, was the important factor throughout the whole team, whether they were defending or attacking.

Kiwi, Craig Paterson, made a very welcome return to the Hillhead ranks. And with 10 minutes left of the first period it was just like old times as he made great space for himself at the top of Clydesdale's circle, collecting the ball from a superb pass from outside the opposition 23, turning on it, and cracking it beyond the helpless keeper! It was a great goal for Hillhead and well deserved, as they just got better and better.

The second half saw an inspired Hillhead take charge of the game against an increasingly beleaguered Clydesdale who started to push up as many men as possible to get back into the game. At times Clydesdale made this tactic pay with some good attacks and a couple of penalty corners. But in truth, they rarely troubled an excellent Hillhead defence and an ever competent Jamie Frail who patted away shots with ease. Throughout the game, Hillhead coach Keith Joss made a number of important and telling, rolling substitutions. When you have the likes of young players such as Ryan Bell, Shane Boyce, Ewan Campbell and others, to rely on, it can be particularly punishing on an opposition that are pushing most of their players high. For Hillhead, coach Joss's tactics were absolutely spot on as AMN Hillhead pushed forward looking for more goals.

With 15 minutes left on the clock, Hillhead's strategy and great attacking hockey, paid off with three penalty corners in a row awarded. Clydesdale were fighting for their cup lives now and kept the first two short corners at bay - but Hillhead made no mistake on the third one, with Graeme Campbell slotting it away superbly! Hillhead, who had been firing on all cylinders throughout the game, seemed to be breathing fire now as they kept on pressing for yet another goal. And that third, match winning goal, came with 8 minutes to go - and what a stormer it was! After yet another aggressive and direct attack down the middle of the park, the ball was laid off into the opposition circle to the right of a fast outcoming keeper - and from what seemed like nowhere, Andrew Hilton lunged at the ball in front of him - sliding a good 5 metres - to whack the ball beyond the keeper! Goal 3 for Hillhead - a well deserved third goal that was to sum up Hillhead's overall attitude and fantastic game play throughout the team and the 70 minutes played.

As the final whistle sounded, taking AMN Hillhead through to the next round, it was smiles all round for a team that gave 110% in every department. Every player put in a solid shift, with two players in particular giving the opposition lots of trouble. As mentioned, Graeme Campbell was superb going forward and at times unstoppable. When a new Scotland coach is eventually appointed, he should get himself along and watch this man in action. And Ireland should be equally proud of Andy Maclaine! Maclaine was efficient in all aspects of his game; he was brilliant going forward, and yet at the same time marked Clydesdale's best player out of the game. Man of the Match could have gone to just about anyone, but Andy Maclaine just edges it, for an all round great performance.

Clydesdale gave it everything in this good spirited game. All credit has to be given to them for pushing up in numbers - especially in the second half - in their endeavour to win this cup game, but today wasn't their day against a superior Hillhead team.

For AMN Hillhead coach, Keith Joss, and his team, all the hard work was well worth it as everything seemed to naturally fall into place as they head into the last eight of the Arthur McKay Scottish Cup.

FINAL SCORE: AMN Hillhead 3 Greaves Clydesdale 0.

Alan Meikle celebrates as goal 2 goes in for Hillhead courtesy of Graeme Campbell.

Celebration all round after Graeme Campbell's penalty corner.

Clydesdale's keeper looks on helplessly as goal 3, scored by Andrew Hilton, hits the back board.

As goalscorer Andrew Hilton picks himself up, Ewan Campbell and Man of the Match, Andy Maclaine, celebrate.

Plenty of positives in face of defeat

After a morale boosting win against city rivals Clydesdale in the Scottish Cup, Hillhead faced the ominous task of trying to beat free scoring and undefeated Scottish Champions Kelburne at Bellahouston. In the previous league encounter, Hillhead matched Kelburne for large periods of the match, but rued missed chances, finally succumbing 4-1.

Hillhead were without strikers Iain Mathie (inj), Graeme Campbell (inj) and Andrew Duke (work) for this tricky encounter.

Despite a pre match warning/preminition Hillhead conceded within 30 seconds of the start with fortune teller Alan Meikle asleep in possession. Hillhead responded well to this early setback weathering the elements and a Kelburne storm in the first 15 minutes. In a half which saw Hillhead grow with confidence chances fell to both teams, with Kelburne more astute in front of goal with two scrappy goals giving them a three nil halftime lead. Probably not a fair reflection on the chances created.

Halftime Kelburne 3 - 0 Hillhead

The second half presented Hillhead with some relief from the headwind they faced in the first preiod. Hillhead began the second half well and seemed more confident in all aspects of their play thanks to an outstanding rearguard. Despite their improved play the lethal Kelburne scored two well taken goals before Hillhead finally got the goal they so richly deserved, courtesy of the mercurial Craig Paterson. This concession seemed to anger Kelburne as they sprang into life with two late goals, leaving the scoreline as a poor reflection on the what was a competitive match. Kelburne were even kind enough to compliment the Hillhead squad on their efforts and play. Not bad for a team struggling in the relegation zone and surely must give players hope for an improved second half.

Full time Kelburne 7 - 1 Hillhead

Hillhead Junior Men showing great maturity and promise

On Friday, Hillhead Hockey took advantage of the school holidays and some atypical Scottish weather, holding a coaching session for their male juniors.

Although the planning was a bit last minute, the coaches were delighted by a turn out of 19 boys from as far afield as Helensburgh and Lenzie and with boys as young as 11 and as old as 17. This good turn out not only allowed newer additions to the squads to find their feet but it also allowed the coaches to talent i.d. and work on some basic principles of play.

The plan for the future is to run more regular age specific coaching for the youngsters, possibly during Tuesday night training.

Thanks to Ewan Campbell, Matthew McIntyre. Colin McClure and Andy Lovat for their support on the day.

Anchor hold strong to hold off fighting Hillhead

On a relatively mild early January afternoon, undefeated league leaders Hillhead and supporters Alan Meikle and crutch bound Graeme Campbell made the short journey along the M8 to face title rivals Anchor in an eagerly anticipated encounter. Hillhead were missing playmaker Johnny Horn (work) and Ally Graves for this tricky and important away fixture.

The match started with Hillhead on the top from the first whistle, with their first meaningful attack resulting in the award of a penalty corner, which Hillhead failed to capitalize on. The next ten minutes saw Hillhead continue to build upon their good form in 2011 with lively striker Jamie Gillies shooting wide past both posts after good wing play by the same player. It was not until the eleventh minute of the match that Anchor finally entered the Hillhead D. Buoyed by this significant momentum shift Anchor were visibly lifted having weathered the early Hillhead storm. A minute later Anchor had fashioned their first strike on goal, which skipped feet past the Hillhead goal. For the first time in the half play was very much in the balance. Despite Anchor having better possession than previously, Hillhead squandered a handful of good chances, with Wullie McKechnie disappointed not to tap in at the back post and Jamie Gillies failing to find that all important pass having rounded the Anchor keeper. With Anchor holding firm during turbulent times, they then piled the pressure on Hillhead forcing Gerry McGuinness into a couple of compotent saves.

Halftime Anchor 0 - 0 Hillhead

With Hillhead having played a fairly cautious first half despite having the best of it, they would have to be more positive in the second period to break down a stubborn Anchor defence. Defensive stalwart and club President Dave McKinney predicted a narrow 1 nil Hillhead win as he took to the pitch for the second 35 minutes. The first ten minutes of the half were all about the home team, with wave after wave of attack, proving Hillhead all sorts of problems. After a couple of penalty corners and near misses, Hillhead finally caved in with Anchor taking a deserved lead as they flicked the ball low past a part blinded Hillhead keeper. Having worked so hard to establish a league Anchor then hit the self destruct button with their impressive young winger green carded for back chat, followed soon after by a yellow card after a cynical professional foul by Anchor’s central defender, which prevented Hillhead from scoring a straight forward equalizer. Despite being down to ten men Anchor continued to be a threat due in part to their higher workrate. Six minutes after their first yellow card, Anchor made their task harder once again with a second yellow card. Hillhead dumbfounded by this needless collapse took full advantage with silky striker Mike McLelland linking neatly with Wullie McKechnie to finally unlock the resolute Anchor defence. A great solo run by Jamie Gillies followed from the next passage of play only to be thwarted by a desperate last ditch tackle just as he was about to pull the trigger. Soaking up the Hillhead pressure Anchor countered at pace to once more take the lead in what was now an engrossing encounter, memorable for its competitiveness rather than the hockey on show. Refusing to give up Hillhead at last stepped their game up pushing their midfield higher up the field in search of an equalizer. This renewed positivity was to pay dividends with constant threat Wullie McKechnie finishing well from a tight angle. With all the goals in the game coming the second half and Hillhead behind twice and draw would have been a good result. However, there was to be a final twist as Anchor scored a deserved winner after some slick interplay set up their centre mid to score a winner.

Fulltime Anchor 3 - 2 Hillhead

A frustrating match in which Hillhead failed to capitalise on early chances which would have changed the shape of the match. An engrossing second half which had everything with goals, cards and gamesmanship galore. Anchor’s greater desire and workrate were just too much for a Hillhead team which on the day were a credit to the club both for their fight till the final whistle and their graceful acceptance of defeat.

Hillhead's young and not so young pretenders earn fighting draw

Hillhead welcomed back former coach and player Alan Shirley for what would be his third playing spell at the club. This would prove to be a fantastic acquistion for Hillhead's development squad along with wise heads such as Vic Brown, Robin Gillies and John Candlin to name but a few. Marshalled seamlessly by captain and playmaker Robert Frame Hillhead took to the field with a handful of 12 year olds and the rest of the team under 15. Their opposition had a couple of younger players, but on the whole were a robust and experienced outfit.

Despite periods of good play from both teams, Hillhead's lightweight forwards struggled physically to impose themselves on their adult counterparts depsite some lovely flowing moves. Uddingston capitalised upon Hillhead's frugality in front of goal taking a goal lead early in the second half. The Hillhead youngsters showed terrific maturity and stole back into the game with John Candlin turning back the years, as he deflected a fiercely struck cross low past the hapless Uddingston keeper. Game on. As is so often the case, the next goal would arrive five minutes after Hillhead's equaliser, with a rampant Hillhead taking a surprise lead from the stick of Alan Shirley, albeit not the cleanest strike from the powerful hitter. Credit to Uddingston as they fought back in the closing ten minutes and grabbed a deserved equaliser to settle the match at 2-2.

Another fantastic performance by a very young Hillhead development side, who continue to develop and display all the attributes Hillhead hope for in their players.

Reid hat trick seals Hillhead Final spot

Having won all of their league matches, Hillhead were number one seeds for their pool and faced the runners up in pool B Western Wildcats in a keenly anticipated semi final at Bellahouston.

Hillhead were missing goal scorer Fraser Ward (ill) but welcomed back Callum McLeod who had been missing due to exams and welcomed Steven Frame and John Reid into the squad for the first time this season. Grant McMillan and Jamie McTaggart were Hillhead's other youth representatives. Adults on the day were Keith Joss, Alan Meikle, William McKechnie, Lewis and Gregor Campbell.

A confident start saw Hillhead establish a two goal lead halfway through the first half. Taking their foot of the gas Hillhead allowed Western back into the match as they fired in two quick goals in as many minutes to level the score at halftime.

Halftime Hillhead 2 - 2 Western

The second half was when the match really came to life with Hillhead restoring their lead from the passback after a tremendous passing move. This really spurred Western on as they came back hard and strong. Goals were exchanged before Hillhead finally pulled clear towards the end thanks to a John Reid hat trick and a brace for Steven Frame.

Final Score Hillhead 6 - 4 Western

Next week sees Hillhead Hornets playing Greenock in the West District.

In Hillhead Hoops classification match they came out 6-3 winners against Anchor, thanks to goals from Michael Sherry (3) and Scott Bissell (3).

McGregor's Indoor boys do Hillhead proud!

Okay, no promotion back up to Division 1 - although it was close! But Hillhead National 2 indoor side have had a great season that came to it's conclusion on Sunday, February 6th, with some fantastic hockey played by this tight knit, spirited group of players.

And the top credit has to go to experienced outdoor and indoor captain, Stuart McGregor, who pulled everything together with his usual superb organisational skills, to produce a happy team of various ages that gelled brilliantly over a number of weeks and produced some great hockey.

The match is on Saturday 11th February, 9.30a.m. pushback at GHK. Support would be welcome and encouraged.

Hillhead fightback falls short against Deadly Dale

In their opening encounter of this year's National League, Hillhead faced much fancied rivals Clydesdale at G.H.K on a cold and dull morning.

The hockey from the outset lit up the morning with Clydesdale totally dominant in the opening exchanges, with flowing hockey causing Hillhead all sorts of problems. Hillhead welcoming five new players to their squad took time to settle. Clydesdale took full advantage of this early disharmony as they took a deserved lead after confusion in the Hillhead defence left keeper Westwood with no chance. Hillhead settled into the game after this early setback and gradually began to compete more with their impressive opponents. They were, however, to face a setback late in the half with Clydesdale adding a second goal after a beautiful passing move.

Halftime HIllhead 0 - 2 Clydesdale

Hillhead took to the field in the second half looking for the more of the good attitude and effort applied in a difficult first half. As it happened, they gave every ounce of energy they had creating ten times as many chances in the second half as they did in the first. Like a side transformed, they grew with confidence and started linking up more successfully than in the first half. Chances came and went, until late in the match with John Reid sealing a good performance with a penalty corner strike. Six minutes to go, game on! Hillhead with nothing to lose pushed for the win, with four players posted high in search an equaliser. Unfortunately this allowed Clydesdale to counter attack and score a third and final goal, sealing the three points in an enthralling encounter. No points, but plenty of positives for a squad of players that had never met let alone played together.

Thanks to Ronnie Meikle for umpiring and all the support.

Fulltime Hillhead 1 - 3 Clydesdale

Hillhead Youngsters outgunned by Greenock

Having won all four of their group matches against Anchor, Greenock 'A', Uddingston and Rpttenrow and a semi final against Western Wildcats, Hillhead now face the same Greenock side they had faced beaten earlier in the season.

Hillhead were without experienced adults Keith Joss(coaching) and Alan Meikle(family commitments) for the final. In their place was the stalwart and indoor defensive talisman Dougie Graham. The only other "adults" in the squad were William McKechnie, Lewis and Gregor Campbell. The rest of the squad consisted of Grant McMillan (14), Jamie McTaggart (14), Steven Frame (15), Fraser Ward (14), Callum McLeod (16), John Reid (15).

Despite their best efforts Hillhead were well beaten by an older and more experienced Greenock side. Captain William McKechnie, however, praised the performance of the youngsters in testing circumstances.

Final Score Hillhead 1 - 7 Greenock

Disappointed at this loss the boys have a chance to put things right this weekend in the West District Cup.

Hillhead lift West District Indoor Cup

With Hillhead Hoops eliminated in the first round by Clydesdale, in a tightly contested 5-3 defeat, Hillhead's hopes rested with their other side. Getting a bye to the semis, Hillhead faced Stepps in the semi final. Stepps began the match a player short, so Hillhead player Michael Sherry stepped in to make the teams even. In a fairly uneventful and unispiring match albeit a decent standard Hillhead took an early lead through John Reid, only for Hillhead's own Michael Sherry to fire in an equaliser. The second half was more ot the same with Hillhead re establishing their lead only for Stepps to equalise to take the tie to penalties, despite Hillhead dominating the match. To put it bluntly, the penalties were awful with only two converted out of the six takers. This took the tie to sudden death, whereupon Hillhead finally sealed the victory.

FINAL

The final was keenly contested but ultimately one sided affair with Hillhead taking advantage of a tired Clydesdale side to seal a convincing and satisfying 9-4, with Hillhead's under 16s playing large spells on the match unassisted by adult support. Goals in the final were for Fraser Ward (4), Steven Frame (2), John Reid (2) and Andrew Hilton (1)

Hillhead take shine off CALA's latest development

After a very disappointing first half to the season, when despite some good performances Hillhead failed to seal some deserved victories. This indifferent start left them seven points adrift of third from bottom CALA going into saturday's match, and only three points clear of automatic relegation.

As if the loss of so many players at the start of the year was not testing enough, Hillhead were blighted by a mini injury crisis with influential players Wei Adams (Hip) and Graeme Campbell (Foot) failing late fitness tests. Steve Pollock was also carrying an injury but braved the pain to make the starting line up. Called up to cover the injuries were defensive specialist Douglas Graham and forward nuisance Johnny Horne.

The match began at a reasonable pace with neither team particularly adventurous in their endeavour. The first goal may have gone either way based on the opening exchanges, however, it was Hillhead that gained the impetus with Ulsterman Ryan Bell finishing well on his reverse.

Halftime: CALA 0 - 1 Hillhead

The second half started with more intent signalled by CALA than in the previous 35 minutes. There more positive start rocked Hillhead, as they looked increasingly unsettled and nervous. This dodgy restart proved costly as CALA equalised at a penalty corner. With plenty of time on the clock, however, there was no need to press the panic button. Infact Hillhead relaxed and began to play some of their best attacking hockey in years, carving CALA open with almost every adventure forward. This dominance was rewarded with a second goal with the tireless Andrew MacLaine finishing off neatly after a goal mouth melee. Having regained the lead the next passage of play was to be a massive momentum swinger. CALA in search of a quick equaliser won a penatly corner. A low drag flick was magnificently saved by stand out defender Iain Hilton on the line. Rather than dwelling on this goal saving intervention, Hillhead's defence caught CALA off guard by taking a quick hit out. 20 seconds and 5 passes later Alan Meikle had deflected a pin point pass from winger Cameron Mowat past the hapless CALA keeper. A two goal lead comforting but not enough of a lead to setlle on. Hillhead did what they do best and continued to push for goals, only to be thwarted by some last ditch tackles by a now frantic opposition defence. Despite having little possession in the second half CALA got a goal out of nothing with the mercurial Scott Sutherland scoring from an impossible angle to give Hillhead "squeaky bums" for the closing minutes. Thankfully Hillhead got the victory their efforts deserved as CALA squandered a last minute penalty corner. A terrific gutsy performance with some awesome attacking hockey and physical defence.

Fulltime CALA 2 - 3 Hillhead

Next week sees Hillhead host ex players Tom Kemsley, Callum Duke and David Forrester's Edinburgh University. 2.25pm pushback at Jordanhill

Hill Thrill in Classic Nil Nil

After a morale boosting three points away to CALA the previous week, Hillhead were keen to register their first league points at home this season against an impressive university side. Hillhead despite having a full squad on paper, were plagued by injuries with Graeme Campbell, Steve Pollock and Paul Crooks all playing through injury and illness. Unfortunately international defender Wei Adams failed a fitness test, delaying his anticipated return to action for another week. Iain Luke and Munro Stewart were called in to the squad as cover.

The first half was a keenly contested affair with high energy the order of the day, with Hillhead doing most of the running in attack against a slightly sluggish Uni side. Despite having the best of the half Hillhead were remisc in possession in the final quarter, failing to capitalise on overloads. Penalty corners were shared by both sides, but to no avail, despite Andrew Hilton coming within inches of making a break through.

Halftime 0 - 0

The sceond half continued in the same vein as the third with lots of running and energy shown by both sides. Edinburgh were better in the second period as they stretched Hillhead and began to find channels for running and picking telling passes. On the day Hillhead's defence and the reliable Jamie Frail were too strong as they repelled a handful of attacks in the second half. Good chances to steal the match came and went for both sides, but in all honesty a draw was the fairest result for both. A thoroughly engrossing and fierce encounter in which neither team gave an inch. A good point for Hillhead which sees them continue their revival.

Fulltime 0 - 0

Clydesdale slump to four goal deficit as Hillhead post Interim recovery

After an enthralling draw the previous week against Edinburgh universities finest, HIllhead welcomed south side rivals Clydesdale to Jordanhill for what promised to be a close fought match.

As predicted Clydesdale began the match at a frenetic pace. Hillhead coach Joss had prepared his charges for this eventuality and they settled in quickly to ride out the early attacking storm. After a dominant start Clydesdale soon ran out of ideas as spaces left in defence by their attacking abandon allowed Hillhead opportunities galore. The first goal of the game was tocome after a turnover in the Dale midfield saw midfielder Alan Meikle link up with Graeme Campbell who rounded the flat footed Dale keeper to calmly give Hillhead the lead. The remainder of the half saw both teams squander chances before Clydesdale clinched an equaliser after a scrappy exchange in the D.

Halftime Hillhead 1 - 1 Clydesdale

Hillhead confident that they had a lot more to give took to the pitch with an air of confidence. This positivity proved infectious as the from the pushback they put their opponents under pressure. Hillhead's good start was soon rewarded, as Wei Adams powered the ball into the net at a penalty corner. A third goal came soon after with Graeme Campbell doubling his goal tally with a neat finish at the back post. A two goal lead in the space of minutes, the momentum was well and truly with the home side. Not content with a two goal cushion, Hillhead pushed on. Three more goals were to follow for tireless midfielder Andrew Hilton after a stunning Wei Adams run, Johnny Horn and msot notably oustanding defender Iain Hilton who scored his first league goal in National One. Unfortunately despite another great performance by keeper Frail, Hillhead conceded with the last hit of the match.

Fulltime Hillhead 6 - 2 Clydesdale

It was a fantastic day at the office as Hillhead 1's put six past Clydesdale 1's.

Time up for Dundee as late Bell strike settles ding dong affair

Having remained undefeated in 2012, Hillhead were looking to continue their revival against bottom of the league Dundee Wanderers at Jordanhill. Missing for Hillhead were Matthew McIntyre and Shane Boyce (injured) and Steve Pollock (male bonding weekend). Andrew Duke returned to the squad.

After a fairly eventless start to the match, Dundee took a shock lead after a couple of balls bounced their way, much to Hillhead's dismay and bemusement. There was no panic however, as Hillhead put this down to bad luck. Hillhead settled well after this early setback to level the scores five minutes later with striker Graeme Campbell deflecting a penalty corner switch into the roof of the Dundee net. Seemingly in control, Hillhead again surrendered the lead after some sloppy defending against a tricky Dundee attack. As previously, Hillhead stuck to their gameplan and grabbed a second equaliser with Ulsterman Ryan Bell finishing on his reverse from an acute angle.

Halftime: Hillhead 2 - 2 Dundee Wanderers

Hillhead's key focus for the second period was to "man up" physically and to avoid being dragged into a running game. This never really transpired as a resolute Dundee side continued to make life incredibly difficult for the Hillhead midfield. Some poor turnovers and sloppy Hillhead play allowed Dundee to gain the lead for a third time, with a low drive from a penalty corner. You guessed it! Hillhead drew level soon after with Wei Adams converting at a penalty corner. Scores tied once again, with the match dominated by Hillhead in every way other than scoreline. Dundee once again took the lead with ten minutes to go, with Hillhead in disarray at the back. Surely they could not pull back again. Pull back they did, with Andrew Hilton converting a penatly coolly after striker Cameron Mowat was hacked down cynically in the D. Scores tied for the fourth time in a pulsating match. Hillhead realising the importance of a win pushed forward with renewed vigour in the closing five minutes and in all honesty could have added a goal with every attack if it were not for some last ditch defending and fine saves from their keeper. Hillhead's self belief and never say die attitude was rewarded with minutes to spare as Ryan grabbed his second and Hillhead's winner, sending the exhausted Hillhead players crazy.

Final Score Hillhead 5 - 4 Dundee Wanderers

Next weeks sees Hillhead travel to Dundee to play on form Grove Menzieshill (Sat) and host Grange in the quarter finals of the Scottish Cup (Sun).

Striker Ryan Bell scores AMN Hillhead's winning goal!

Mist opportunity as weather halts Hillhead comeback

After an incredibly disappointing 3-0 loss to Western Wildcats in midweek, and an energy sapping double header the previous weekend, Hillhead went into Saturday's important match with tired legs. The match got off to the worst possible start for Hillhead as Grange opened the scoring within the first minute, with Cammy Fraser scoring the most unlikely goal. The international striker mis hit the ball off the back of his stick lobbing keeper Frail and eluding defender Iain Hilton. The instincts of the Hillhead defence and even the honest umpire said it must have hit the wrong side of the stick, however, it happened so quickly that it was hard to be sure, goal given. The bad luck was compounded ten minutes later with Grange awarded a penalty much to Hillhead's dismay and bemusement. Grange duly dispatched the resulting penalty. Two goals down having not really done anything wrong, Hillhead remained positive. This self belief was rewarded as Ryan Bell pulled a goal back. A deserved equaliser came soon after with Matthew McIntyre well placed to score the equaliser.

Halftime Grange 2 - 2 Hillhead

Hillhead weathered a volley of Grange attacks at the start and stole away on the counter to win a penalty flick after good work from Andrew Hilton and Johnny Horne. Andrew Hilton wrong footed the Grange keeper to give Hillhead a surprise lead five minutes into the second half. Hillhead brimming with confidence should have been two up moments later but Alan Meikle parried the ball straight into the Grange keeper from close range. Much to all players concerned surprise the match was abandoned five minutes later as a low fog crept in. The umpires deemed that the fog was preventing them from having clear sight of the ball when air bound so in the interests of safety the umpires took the difficult decision to call the game off. A very disappointing outcome for Hillhead who were well placed to gain at least a point in their quest for survival. A cruel twist indeed.

Hillhead's finest star for Scotland

Whilst the season comes to an end for most of us, spare a thought for James Ross and John Reid who continue to train hard as part of their involvement with Scotland Under 18s and Under 16s respectively.

James earned his first cap for Scotland Under 18s on Friday, going down 5-1 to the Welsh in Wales. Playing in various positions up the left flank in the second test, James enjoyed being part of an improved performance as the team once more lost, this time by three goals to one. In the final match James played the entire match give or take a minute or so, and contributed to the team's best performance as they salvaged some pride with a hard fought 1-1 draw.

Next season promises to be a big one for James at club level as he continues to improve and impress. A place in the first XI is surely his to lose.

John Reid playing his second season at Under 16s again visited Dutch club HDM for their annual invitational tounament. Scotland unlike their opponents fielded an under 16 side whilst the other club sides and Switzerland fielded under 18 sides. Scotland finished a credible sixth with three successive wins against Dutch Side Almere, Aberdeen Grammar School and most notably Switzerland Under 18s. John scored in a friendly against hosts HDM and in the tournament against Ring Pass. He played the majority of the tournament at centre forward.

Next season should see John establish himself in the first XI which will further his progress at international level.

WELL DONE BOYS, HILLHEAD ARE VERY PROUD OF YOUR SUCCESSES

P.S. - Hillhead are also delighted to hear that Aiden Docherty now at Inverleith continues to dazzle, capped for a second year at under 18 level. A credit to Hillhead and I am sure Inverleith.

Great wins for Hillhead's Ladies and Mens teams

With the season stuttering to a relatively meaningless finale with both teams in action today secure within their league, pride was at stake as Hillhead ladies welcomed table topping Inverleith whilst the men's seconds faced CALA's second string.

Hillhead 1 st XI Ladies v. Inverleith 1st XI

In an enthralling encounter Hillhead ladies defied their league position to stun Edinburgh's Inverleith, who came to Glasgow looking to win the league two championship. A terrific 2-1 win, and a double over the table toppers, a sign of the capability of a squad which is let down by inconsistent results. Neverthless a terrific end to the season and something to build on next season.

Final Score Hillhead 2 - 1 Inverleith

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hillhead 2nd XI Men v. Calan Edinburgh 2nd XI

With two games remaining in what has been a tough season for the second XI having lost a number of high profile players to the ones, today's match was an opportunity for the team to finish the season on a high. A win would guarantee a sixth place finish, in what is a very high standard league. In their first encounter of the season Cala got the better of Hillhead with a tightly fought win. Hillhead produced a terrific performance on the day showing a hunger and desire which had been lacking in previous matches. This work ethic and togetherness paid off as they ran away 4-2 winners with goals for Stuart McGregor, Jamie Gillies, James Ross and Euan Campbell. Well done boys.

Final Score Hillhead 4 - 2 Cala

Hillhead Best in the West

During a season full of twists and turns the destiny of the West District Division One crown was well and truly in Hillhead's control. A win against fifth placed Strathclyde Unviersity away at Millerston would seal the Hillhead men an historic first Division One title. Anything less than three points would see South Ayrshire side Anchor win the league outright, a side that went through the seasons with only two defeats.

In front of a large Hillhead travelling support, boasting junior, female and male members, the stage was set for a thrilling end to a rollercoaster season. Going into their final match Hillhead had only lost seven points with one defeat and two draws, a remarkable feat by any measures.

The first half of the match was a rather nervy affair with Hillhead just about on top in the first half, despite a lacklustre attacking display. It was no surprise that Hillhead's first goal came at a set play, as Strathclyde's defence had offered Hillhead very few sights at goal from open play. The goal was scored by Hillhead playmaker Johnny Horne with a fierce and well placed drag flick.

Halftime Strathclyde University 0 - 1 Hillhead

The second half was a lot better from the champions elect as they completely dominated proceedings, with their first half nerves seemingly banished. The performance grew from strength to strength as the outstanding Hillhead defence of McKinney, Downes, Lennox and Kalsi produced one of the most composed and error free performances witnessed in recent memory. Hillhead's dominance produced two more goals with the outstanding junior Jed Lennox scoring after a 30 yard run and shot. Another junior product, Jamie Gillies, came good late to seal the deal with a neat finish from close range. An outstanding team performance in which every individual gave their all. Not one individual could be singled out for praise as over the course of the match and indeed the season all involved were superb. An achievement unsurpassed in Hillhead Men's hockey history. Congratulations to captain Nick Downes.

Full time Strathclyde 0 - 3 Hillhead

Thanks to Alan MacFarlane (umpiring), the Hillhead Committee and sponsor John Candlin (AMN Contracts) for supporting the boys throughout the season.

Congratulations also to Anchor for a tremendous season and terrific grace and sportsmanship throughout. A credit to the league and your club.

Records roll as Hillhead beat Grange

With the season all but finished for AMN Hillhead having performed a houdini act after the christmas break tto avoid what looked like an inevitable play-off. Grange on the other hand, were preparing for the European 'C' division next month, so a good performance was paramount.

Hillhead were still smarting from an abandoned fixture in March in which their 3-2 lead was in vein as fog spoiled the party, with the match abandoned after 45 minutes. Moreover they had a point to prove having capitulated to Grange 11-2 early in the season.

With regulars Steve Pollock, Shane Boyce, Alan Meikle, Matt McIntyre and Jamie Frail unavailable due to a combination of ill health and work commitments, tonight's match was an opportunity for coach Joss to try out some younger players notably James Ross and Rory Kerr at the highest level.

In a closely contested match in which both sides squandered chances Hillhead prevailed with an outstanding 3-2 victory thanks to an Andrew Duke brace and a goal from Wei Adams. This result heralded Hillhead's finest ever victory in NL1, having never beaten a top two side since promotion to the top flight. It was also the first time Hillhead had ever beaten Grange in NL! both indoor and outdoor, the only club Hillhead had never beaten at the top level in either indoor or outdoor. And to top it all Hillhead moved up a place to seventh in NL1, a remarkable feat given their predicament at the turn of the yeay.

Hillhead Players in International Action

This weekend sees current Hillhead player Wei Adams and former Hillhead player Callum Duke representing Scotland's Senior Men against England 'A'. This adds to Callum's first senior cap against Spain the previous weekend. Hillhead are incredibly proud of both players who last played together for Hillhead 1st XI five seasons ago.

Also in action this weekend are John Swift (O'40s) and Stuart Stephen and club sponsor John Candlin (O'55s). The aforementioned players are representing Scotland in the age graded Home Nations. Hillhead would like to extend our congratulations to all players and wish them all the best in their tournaments.

Old Firm/New Co Firm derby? A sign of things to come

Hillhead Men's Hockey Club, notably Grant Thomson aka Kevin and Jamie Westwood, revived Hillhead's Annual Old Firm football challenge match on Saturday at Scotstoun Leisure Centre.

In what has been a troubled and tumultuous couple of years for both halves of the Old Firm in the last couple of seasons, this match held greater significance in terms of restoring pride and bragging rights than on previous occassions.

With twenty seven hearty wannabe footballers dusting off their mouldies, already those of the blue persuasion had entered into the season with more optimism and playing numbers than their once great heroes. A cynical pundit may even comment that the ability of the players lining up at the start of the match would not be sneezed at by The Rangers Football Club. For the one man and the dog that strayed past you would have forgiven him for thinking he had witnessed a snapshot into the future of the Scottish game and Charles Green's asset stripping holocaust. All that would be left is a bunch of hapless omni-shaped men, attired in any blue shirt they could get their hands on, playing on a cooncil park in front of the subs benches.

Depsite all the pre match hype and the fact that Celtic had a stronger line up on paper, with the endurable ginger Dukes shoring up the attack, anything can happen in an Old/New Co firm game.

As it happened, the pre match hype was jusitified and accurate in its dismissal of Club 12, or should I say Club 13, as the boys in lilac, purple, navy, royal and dark blue went down by a record 13 goals to 2 against their bitter rivals. The main slayer of the huns was another red head Jamie Gillies who bagged five goals in a devastating performance. Other goals were for Andrew Duke who twice lobbed goalkeeper Jamie Westwood. Gerry McGuinness popped up with a goal before Ger Barrett stole the show with a 40yard screamer which left the oppositon keeper dumbfounded and his teammates questioning why he plays hockey!

Despite the hammering event organiser Jamie Westwood nominated Jonny Duke as The Rangers F.C.s best player on the day, Ally McCoist take note, with Jamie Gillies picking up the plaudits for the Celts.

A cracking afternoon was had by all.

A massive thanks to Grant and Jamie for organising the event and agreeing to continue this tradition into the future

PRE SEASON FITNESS STARTS 17th JULY

Pre Season fitness training begins again on Tuesday 17th July!

NEWS FLASH

Will James Ross rule the roost once again in the stamina events?

Will any of our veterans stand toe to toe with Jim Bate on the infamous Hillhead Hill Runs?

Will Gregor Campbell see any improvement to his fitness come the start of the season?

Will Alan Meikle complete a full press up this season?

Will Dougie Graham turn up in his full Hillhead playing strip?

Will Jamie Gillies turn up?

Will McGregor recall the " I used to be sprinter story"?

For answers to all these gripping questions, you will need to turn up and see for yourself.

The training which is open to ALL members and takes place at the Crow Road exit side of Gartnavel Hospital grounds.

Players are asked to be there for a 1830hrs start and should be finished no later than 2000hrs. It is recommended players bring plenty of fluids and wet weather cover. If players are unsure of the whereabouts of Gartnavel they can meet at Woodend at 1820hrs where they will be met and walked over to Gartnavel.

This represents a fantastic opportunity to shed the summer gain and to potentially push yourself up a team or two with your new found fitter body.

DO IT

Big high 5's for another great HHC 7's tournament!

The legendary, annual Hillhead Hockey Club summer hockey 7's tournament celebrated it's 35th year this year on Saturday July 28th with another big turnout from many teams and loads of players. And the sun did it's best to avoid the clouds, and despite a couple of heavy showers managed to burn a few unsuspecting players!

The Hillhead Summer 7's tournament has always been a fun tournament played in the proper spirit and this year saw that continued by all players. There was some excellent hockey played between all the sides, and like most years this great tournament saw the appearance of some stars of the past and future. This year we had our very own Scottish Senior internationalist Wei Adams and our Scotland U18 player, James Ross, playing. These guys are basically in full time training for their country, but despite the long hours they put in, they wouldn't want to miss this fun tournament. Also playing was MC Western and Scotland U21 player, Fiona "Wonderwoman" Bruce, not long back from the Euro's in Russia. It was great to see her there too.

But of course, at the end of the day this tournament has always been for everyone of all ages, whether they're a complete beginner or a seasoned veteran - and it's a great way to introduce people to hockey, should they be interested in taking it up over the official season.

In between the near seven hours of hockey there was plenty of burgers, pizzas, sweets and cakes to be consumed. Oh...and there was plenty of soft drinks and alcohol (ssshhhh) to wash it all down with!

So, who won the tournament? That will be the Flashers 1's who beat the Flashers 2's in the final! But as they will tell you, it's all about the taking part, not the result! (Cough!)

A great day enjoyed by all teams and players - and a big thank you to all those teams and their players that turned out! As usual the Hillhead 7's couldn't work without them!

And finally, a huge thank you to Hillhead Ladies players, Katie Fleming and Amy Whiten, who organised the whole day! The two of them, with the help of others, did a fantastic job.

Here's a thought. When this annual tournament started back in 1977, Katie and Amy hadn't even been born! Just goes to show you, you can't keep the Hillhead Summer 7's tournament down!

Hillhead home and dry against Antrim

After a long pre season it was finally time to see if all the fitness work had paid dividends as Hillhead lined up to play against Ulster touring side Antrim H.C. Hillhead were without Jack Chitty, Andrew Hilton and Iain Luke. Staking a claim for places in the firsts were Steven Frame, Gregor Campbell, Munro Stewart, Chris Wilson, Ross Wilson and John Reid.

After a downpour that could only be likened to a monsoon the match began in tricky conditions with driving rain making it difficult for both teams to play attractive and precise hockey. Hillhead adapted best scoring three quick goals in a dominant ten minute spell, with Chris Wilson grabbing a brace and Graeme Campbell finishing neatly at a corner. Antrim deservedly pulled one back at a penalty corner. Unfortunately impressive defender James Ross was forced off with a burst face after he got in the way of a neat save from keeper Rory Kerr.

The second half was a closer affair with Antrim scoring to make in 3-2. Hillhead took note of their improved resolve and stepped things up with the brilliant Campbell scoring a second before youngster John Reid and under 21 international Matthew McIntyre scored to make the score 6-2.

All in all a good performance given the stage of preparations. Special mention to those players stepping up from the seconds that performed brilliantly. Hillhead 1st XI play Kelburne tomorrow at Bellahouston.

A Stepp too far for lacklustre Hillhead

Hillhead faced up to NL2 side Stepps today in one of their final pre season matches before the resumption of the league. Hillhead had a make shift squad with first team regulars Paul Crooks, Steve Pollock, Iain Hilton, Andrew Hilton and Andrew Duke all missing. Recent first team players James Ross, John Reid and Chris Wilson were also missing. Coming in to stake a claim for the first team were Ulstermen David McCandless and Nick Lowden, as well defenders Munro Stewart and Ross Wilson and youngster Steven Frame.

In what can only be described as a difficult day for a Hillhead squad that never settled throughout the entire 70 minutes, Stepps performed well, proving to be tricky opponents throughout. They were solid if not outstanding in defence, swift and effective in midfield and powerful and imposing up front. Hillhead in contrast were hesitant out the back, anonymous in midfield and naive up front. After a forgettable first half Stepps lead 2-1. Hillhead's only goal came from a penalty corner. The second half was better for Hillhead in terms of attacking play with half a dozen gilt edged chances squandered. Stepps however were very good at soaking up the Hillhead pressure and scored two great counter attacking goals, to eventually win the match 4-3.

At the time it seemed like a disastrous result, but this just shows the expectations that the club and teams have. This was miles off a full strength team playing against a team that have consistently been at the top end of NL2. On reflection the team play was very poor for significant chunks of the match, but it allowed coach Joss to cast his eye over both the ones and twos squads. It also gave the players a good challenge and the impetus to up the ante at training with the first competitive outing looming ever closer.

Hillhead Men off to a Good Start

CL1 - Cala Edinburgh 2nd XI v. AMN Hillhead 2nd XI

Hillhead set off east with a strong squad with new members David McCandless and Nick Lowden worthy additions. Munro Stewart was announced as interim captain before he departs for sunnier skies in the New Year. Hillhead were keen to avenge a 2-1 defeat in the same fixture last season.

Hillhead triumphed 3-2 with goals for James Prowse, Chris Wilson and Munro Stewart.

A great win given that the squad had never played together and with Jed Lennox carted off to hospital by James Prowse in the opening few minutes with a suspected broken collar bone. News from the hospital is a dislocated shoulder. HHC wish Jed a speedy recovery.

WD1 - Hillhead 3rd XI v. Anchor 1st XI

Hillhead welcomed last season's fierce rivals Anchor to Jordanhill for the opening fixture of their defence of the West District crown. Hillhead had some new faces and some key players from last season's league triumph missing, notably Jamie Gillies, Johhny Horne and Jed Lennox. Anchor were not at full strength.

Hilhead came out on top with goals from the prolific Wullie McKechnie sealing a good 2-1 win.

WD3 - Anchor 2nd XI v. Hillhead 5th XI

Anchor 0 - 1 Hillhead

When you know in advance that you won't be available, it will be very helpful to all captains if you enter an 'Omission' - log on to your profile and it's obvious what to do. If you subsequently become available, you can alter or delete the omission.

If, for some reason, you are not able to receive email notifications, let me know and it can be arrnaged to notify you by text message instead.

2:1 Honours for University Students

Hillhead lost a closely contested match between and fit and well drilled University side. After a poor first half performance in which Hillhead struggled to gel, they were lucky to go in at half time level. A better second half was to come. Despite this University scored from a quick counter attack. Hillhead responded positively with Johnny Horne scoring a well deserved equaliser. Hillhead were disappointed not to take the lead with some gilt edged chances coming and going. Their lack of decisiveness in front of goal proved costly as University scored a late winner.

Final Score: Hillhead 1 - 2 Edinburgh University

Another enthralling stalemate against strong University side

Hillhead went into Sunday's match with nothing but pride at stake. Meanwhile a win for Edinburgh University would see them progress to the final of the Competition. Hillhead went into the match with fairly low expectations as they were missing no fewer than six first team players. Defenders Paul Crooks, Steve Pollock and Iain Hilton were all missing from defence, whilst Jack Chitty was not available in midfield and forwards Chris Wilson and John Reid were also out of commission. Stepping down from the twos in their place were Ross Wilson, Andrew Black, David McCandless, Colin Gallacher, Alan Meikle and Nick Lowden.

Hillhead began the match poorly with an obvious lack of cohesion within the newly assembled squad. After weathering an early University onslaught Hillhead finally fell short, with Uni scoring from a rebound at a penalty corner. This proved to be a shot in the arm for Hillhead as they relaxed and began to play with more confidence.

The second half was a much better half for Hillhead as they defended aggressively limiting University to scraps for most of the half. On the back of this resolute defence Hillhead counter attacked energetically throughout the half and had the ball in the back of the net within ten minutes to play. Unfortunately the officials felt that Ewan Campbell had failed to travel five metres before crashing the ball to his elder brother for an easy tap in. Regardless, Hillhead should and could have scored several had it not been for some poor decision making and a world class stick save by their keeper.

A terrific second half performance in which Hillhead may have deserved more than a point. Good preparation for the league nonetheless.

Final Score: Edinburgh University 1 - 1 Hillhead

Paul Crooks and Chris Wilson go the distance!

Massive congratulations to Paul Crooks and Chris Wilson who both successfully completed the Loch Ness marathon.

I will let the players themselves tell you their tales of endeavour, blood, sweat and tears at training. And more importantly their times. They earned it!!!

First minute marvel from Meikle sets tone for new season!

Hillhead started brilliantly with a goal in the first minute from Hamish Meikle's dad, Alan!

Dream start? Well yes, and there was some great hockey played. But overall, in terms of possession, it was a relatively even game with both sides – who were missing players - threatening with good counter attacking hockey.

Hillhead at times played some great hockey. There’s some new faces being given a chance this season by coach Keith Joss and they didn’t look out of place by any means.

New member David McCandless had a competent game at the back and James Ross to his left was as hungry looking as ever, putting in some vital tackles and driving forward confidently.

Also joining the ranks of the existing squad from last season - and putting in rolling sub appearances - were Iain Luke, Munro Stewart, Gregor Campbell and Ross Wilson. They all grasped their game time with a relish that’s needed this season, in a changed first team from last season that starts it’s new National 1 campaign this Saturday.

Second team player Ross Wilson is a classic example of what can be achieved in this game in a short space of time. Only three seasons ago he was playing in Hillhead 5’s in the West District - and through hard work on his fitness and training hard on every aspect of his game, he’s climbed the teams rapidly and is now a 2’s regular with an eye on a first team place. Like so many it’s all about his confidence and in his case specifically his first touch. His adrenaline must have been high as he tackled well, stopped the ball well, and distributed it like he’d been doing it at that level for years.

And then there was school boy Fraser Ward. The Scotland U16 player was told by Head Coach Joss to “come along and watch and be ready”. He did come along and watch, but he possibly wasn’t expecting to actually play! It was a shrewd move by Coach Joss who invited Ward and a couple of youngsters to start training with the 1’s and 2’s only a few short weeks ago. Fraser Ward was given a few minutes taste of first team hockey against the best team in the land last night. On a disciplined marking role he worked hard, and whilst he didn’t see much of the ball he stuck to his task and got the job done. He came off the pitch beaming and visibly chuffed that he got a chance. And with his game improving as fast as his shoe size these days, who knows what this boy could achieve in the near future and beyond.

Kelburne last night were missing players themselves – a handful of internationalists no less. They had some new faces too, and under the guidance of coach Mark Ralph rarely put a foot wrong. The Christie brothers, Jonathan and Michael, are a handful all on their own, but they were contained well by a watchful Hillhead midfield and defence in the first half in particular.

However, by midway through the second half the Christie’s and Kelburne were still down a goal and were now pushing hard – they equalised and then did what Kelburne do best, got more goals in quick succession - in this case two.

The final score possibly flatters Kelburne a little bit, but no matter who they play you have to say that they really can wear opposition teams down with their increasing pressure play. By the last few minutes they were playing so high that it looked at times like they were all in Hillhead’s half.

A great run out for both teams – final score: Hillhead 1 Kelburne 3.

Fours Men get Hillhead back on track

After a dismal couple of weeks for Hillhead Hockey Club with some closely fought defeats and some hammerings to boot, the fourth XI restored some pride today. Playing away against Glasgow University, Hillhead secured a fantastic 3-2 victory with goals for Steve Smith, Ger Barrett and Gary Mitchell.

Hillhead lose out again by the odd goal

After a disappointing 2-1 defeat at the hands of Edinburgh University the week before, Hillhead were keen to atone for this disappointment with a result against a more fancied Grange side.

Hillhead started the brighter and having scorned some gilt edged chances took a deserved lead with Johnny Horne finishing neatly from the penalty spot. Grange responded well and soon had the scores level again. In what was to prove to be a close first half, Hillhead once again restored their lead with Colin Gallacher diving on to the end of a well timed pass. Some last ditch goal keeping from Rory Kerr ensured Hillhead took a 2-1 lead into half time.

Half time Hillhead 2 - 1 Grange

The second half was a disappointing 35 minutes, with Grange stifling the previously energetic Hillhead midfield. Their improved play was to reap rewards as they levelled early in the second half after a powerful drag flick at a corner. Hillhead came more into the match as the final whistle loomed large and had chances to steal the lead. However, as had happened last week, Hillhead lost out in the last five minutes as Grange completed a successful second half comeback. A thoroughly engrossing match in which both teams were committed to three points and played with good intensity. Another defeat yes, but a decent performance given the calibre of the opposition.

Full time Hillhead 2 - 3 Grange

Big Weekend for Hillhead's top teams

NL1 Hillhead v Watsonians PREVIEW

After a solid start to the season with draws against Clydesdale and Edinburgh University in the President's Cup, Hillhead 1st XI have lost their way with heavy defeats at the hands of Grange and Clydesdale. In fairness, lady luck has not been with the transitional squad with influential players Euan Campbell and Iain Hilton sustaining broken hands in consecutive weeks. Also unavailable have been starting defensive centres Steve Pollock and Paul Crooks, whilst midfielders Alan Meikle and Andy MacLaine's availability has been iffy due to family commitments. In effect Hillhead have not fielded their strongest team yet this season.

This saturday's match against Watsonians newly promoted to division one promises to be a close run thing, given the two sides previous history. Having played numerous times over the last ten years both in division one and two, the sides have only ever been seperated by one goal. Watsonians have a wealth of experience in their ranks and play a fairly combative style of hockey, therefore Hillhead's older players will need to be on their game to guide their youngsters through the match.

CL1 Grange III v. Hillhead II PREVIEW

After a mixed start to the season with one win, two draws and two losses, Hillhead based on their performances can be disappointed not to have picked up more points so far this season. Narrow defeats to high flying Grange IIs and Edinburgh University IIs showing the potential of the squad. This saturday the team have a big opportunity to double their win tally as they travel to Edinburgh to play Grange III who sit below them in the league as it stands. If they can take more of the chances they create they have a good chance of bringing a precious three points back to Glasgow

Wats' it all about? Hillhead shock Watsonians!

Falling short of stating the bleeding obvious, the harsh reality of Men's National 1 hockey is, that most teams in this division have to do their upmost to win as many of their home games as possible to offset the distinct possibility of away defeats. Current league champions Kelburne are the only team right now who have little problem with home or away games.

Hockey has changed so much in recent years. The old "Short Corner" was always, down the decades, viewed as a great chance to score a goal for any team regardless of the standard of hockey played. The rules for a short corner seemed to flip and change more frequently than a bumbling, lying politician. But one constant, whether it be on grass, red ash or astro, was that feeling of excitement and anticipation that you might just get something out of a game - even a consolation goal - through the short corner.

Now, it's a "Penalty Corner"! And it's aptly named. Woe betide any defence at the highest level of district, regional and national league that gives away the penalty corner, because the "penalty" against that defence is the high percentage of goals scored from these high tech corners. With drag flicks being the favoured move and flying goalbound at what seems like 900mph, even the bravest defenders running out or standing on the goal line could be forgiven for not caring whether they're playing home or away! Penalty corners really do change games now. They can turn games around, throw up unexpected results! More and more they're winning leagues, cups and Olympic medals!

It was two penalty corners in the second half for Hillhead Men's 1's - against Watsonians - that pulled them back from a 1-3 scoreline to 3-3. Umpire Martin "Monty" Monoghan had to get both decisions spot on - and he did. These penalty corners, with the hefty advantage they offer, are like penalties given in football. Getting these crucial decisions wrong can alter the near and long term progress of a hockey club's first team. Hillhead took full advantage and put both away with style, gaining an extremely valuable home point into the bargain.

The first half was mostly Watsonians who put in an excellent performance from minute five when they scored their first goal! And they weren't messing about and had two more scored against a Hillhead side who seemed incapable of getting their passing game up and running. Graeme Campbell, Alan Meikle and captain Andrew Hilton in particular, found themselves getting caught in possession on a handful of occasions simply and in fairness to them because they seemed to have no options when it came to fellow players making any telling runs. But there were flashes of the Hillhead that can definitely play great, free flowing hockey. Jonny Horn as always made the absolute best of his on-pitch time. Always lively up front, he was at the end of a fantastic Hillhead move that saw him diving at a superb through pass that he deflected over the keeper and inches wide of the far post.

After what was overall a pretty dreadful first half was this a sign of things to come? You better believe it! Indeed, just before the end of the first period, Mr Commitment himself, Andy MacLaine, on the end of another excellent passing move, lunged head first at what looked like a lost ball and directed it past a helpless goalkeeper and defender to score Hillhead's first goal.

It was a classic MacLaine goal, and it seemed to change the whole feeling in the team, despite still being 1-3 down, of what had been a dismal first half.

The second period was far from dismal for Hillhead. They came out both guns blazing and frankly dominated what was and is, a very competent Watsonians team. The passion from the HHC boys that seemed to be disguising itself in Halloween costumes in the first half, was back with a vengeance in this now crucial second half. Back was the confidence! Back was belief in fellow players! Back was the determination needed to get back into a game that looked like it was lost 20 minutes in!

Everybody upped their game, and although it felt like an eternity, Hillhead finally scored their second goal with about 10 minutes to go courtesy of one of those two penalty corners scored! Watsonians did get the odd break away attack, but Hillhead were constantly pressing - and with just over 5 minutes on the clock they got their third, thanks to that other high stakes penalty corner. And Hillhead weren't finished. Excitement and blood pressures' rose as Graeme Campbell, with about one minute to go, went on one of his through-the-middle-of-the-park-direct- runs only to be cynically fouled just inside the 25! Another penalty corner given! But it seemed to be in the script that they wouldn't score this one - a dramatic winner - and they didn't!

A valuable away draw for Watsonians! A valuable home draw for AMN Hillhead!

Four miles north, Grove Menzieshill got a fantastic 0-5 away win against Western Wildcats at Auchenhowie!

Before and after Kelburne, who knows what season 2012/2013 is going to throw at the rest of the National 1 players!

FINAL SCORE: Hillhead 3 Watsonians 3

Nine Stepps to heavenly hockey!

Nine goals for Stepps, one goal for Hillhead, some brilliant performances from youngsters on both sides, and complete comfirmation of a great return to hockey last season for a Hillhead player who was out of hockey for 12 years due to injury.

Yep, this Hillhead 6's game V Stepps had everything - a glimpse into the future and flashes of great hockey from the past that are back to a warm welcome.

In truth Stepps dominated most of the play with a Development team that looks well drilled. In a team populated mostly by youngsters under 16, they passed the ball about confidently and always had at least three passing options. But what was really impressive was their reluctance to go on their reverse stick when the open stick was a simpler option. In the world of hi-tech hockey these days that's a rarity it sometimes seems. Stepps got their heads down and played some wonderful team hockey, scoring nine well taken goals. Goodness! Even umpire Martin "Monty Scotland" Monaghan made a cameo appearance for his club! All power to him!

For Hillhead 6's it's not been easy so far this season. For captain Graham Conkie the hardest part of the week is trying to get the same team out every week. The core of the team are the veterans - Graham Conkie himself, David Bell, Stewart Rennie, Grant Haldane and Steve Foster. When the 7's development team don't have a game that free's up Vic Brown, Robert Frame and a number of youngsters - most of them very talented.

Saturday's home game against Stepps saw the absence of captain Graham Conkie due to a family bereavement. But the rest of the stalwarts were there, including Vic Brown from the development team.

And those ever reliable "stalwarts" - David Bell, Grant Haldane, Vic Brown and Steve Foster, sat in defence and basically propped up a team that was, like Stepps, full of youngsters. And despite the 1-9 scoreline, Hillhead played some great hockey when they got the chance. And that score would have been a lot worse if it hadn't been for that wily old defence!

David Bell is probably playing better hockey than ever before, and he looked self assured and confident in the tackle and his distribution was good. Grant Haldane, who is relatively new to Hillhead, is a skillful player who nobody of any age or ability is going to get past easily. Vic Brown had a good solid game as usual; 25 to 30 years ago he was playing first and second team hockey and cruising past players with ease. He had two mazy runs on Saturday that defied age and rolled back the years and the memories!

The rising scoreline could have been soul destroying to the Hillhead youngsters, but their constant enthusiasm despite it all was at times breathtaking. Whilst Hillhead's veterans at the back did everything in their power to stop even more Stepps goals being scored, the boy in goals for Hillhead was outstanding!

Youngster Matt Murray may have picked the ball out of the goals nine times, but it would have been double that if not for him, and nearly him alone! He had a great game, including a number of great saves from penalty corners and many crucial saves from open play. The real talent was in his positioning, facing the frequent onslaughts from some well shaped Stepps attacks. On a number of one on one's, Matt Murray was out on the oncoming striker in lightning fashion and winning the ball cleanly. The lad's a raw talent who with the proper coaching could go a long way.

Further up the park, youngsters including Callum MacLeod, Ciaran Quinn, Alex Roe, Jimmy Lynch-Small, Hamish Geddes and brother Justin, had their work cut out for them against a wall of good organisation called Stepps! Going forward and regularly tracking back, the Hillhead boys worked hard trying to score goals whilst trying to stop more goals going in! A thankless task at times, but all the time they tried to play hockey the way it should be played. Callum MacLeod, Jimmy Lynch Small and Hamish Geddes have matured so much in the last few months that they are now regulars in Hillhead 4's. Development team youngster, Justin Geddes, had a good game and is already growing in confidence as each game goes by.

Okay son, calm down, but not too much!

Ciaran Quinn has been an absolute revelation since he started last season. The talent is unmistakable and has always been there, but it's been blighted at times by the odd tantrum here and there. But! These perceived strops are undoubtedly from a real desire to get as much hockey as possible (last season he hated being substituted!), to gain as much possession of the hockey ball as possible, to win all games if possible. It's all down to his passion for the game.

However, that type of passion doesn't separate him from the rest of his fellow players, most of who are equally as passionate but in a different way. But here's the thing; Ciaran has clearly matured a lot over the summer and whilst the moods are still there to a certain extent, he's channelling them more into his hockey now, and it shows.

Although physically he's not grown much height wise, he has however beefed up a fair bit and is like a mini-tank. Even now, at his young age, very few players are going to knock this lad off the ball easily. He's been playing some great hockey recently and Saturday was no exception. His confidence and unique skill on the ball was at times brilliant, and it enabled him to hold the ball up until the right pass was on - and he made some great passes. His past anger is fast becoming a new found aggression channelled correctly through clever hockey. It's one thing reigning in a bad attitude, but reigning in an attitude thats changing direction towards increasing maturity on and off the park, would just damage the raw talent that's most definitely there.

And finally back to the veterans in the 6's and one man in particular - Steve Foster.

Defender/midfielder, Steve, originally from Wigan, joined Hillhead back in 1984 and plied his trade in the 3's and below for many years, including captaining the 3's in the mid 90's. However, in 1999 he was badly injured and had to give up the game. A few years later he needed a hip replacement (hip replacements are becoming more and more common in hockey these days) and it really looked like he'd never be back at the club he played at for so many years. That was until last season when he made his comeback 12 years after it all seemed over.

Stepps probably spent most of Saturday night trying to decide who their Man of the Match was due to a number of great performances, but for Hillhead it was an easy choice.

Steve Foster had a lot to do alongside his fellow defenders as they combated attack after attack. The comeback man Foster had a superb game as he got down low in his usual style to make many great tackles on both his open and reverse side. Youngsters a third of his age and ten times faster couldn't get passed the man! It was an inspired performance including four saves on the line followed by great distribution. He actually had a fifth save on the line...but that was with his feet! PF awarded and scored! But within a nine goals against bonanza, nobody was worrying too much!

The final scoreline was far from ideal for Hillhead 6's, but there was a lot to take from it as far as the good spirit and great hockey shown.

FINAL SCORE: Hillhead 6's 1 Stepps 9

Hillhead humbled by Clinical Clydesdale

Hillhead lost heavily to an athletic and well drilled Clydesdale side at Jordanhill on Saturday. After a fairly even first half in which Clydesdale established a 2-1 lead, Hillhead went into self destruct albeit they had no luck on the day. With five players guesting from the third XI, Hillhead could ill afford to lose any of their few remaining experienced players. As it happens, massively influential player Dougie Graham failed to return from a first half injury. Mecurial striker Jamie Gillies was finding his stride as injury struck once again. Gregor Campbell also had to take time on the sideline due to a respiratory injury. To compound what was a dire situation Hillhead then lost talented keeper Rory Kerr to a knee knock. This unfortunate chain of injuries and a tiring Hillhead performance lead to a second half horror show.

Final Score Hillhead 2 - 8 Clydesdale

Uni fail to beat Frail as Hillhead strike late

After a difficult start to the season in terms of players leaving and some serious injuries, Hillhead went into Saturday's encounter with their strongest squad of the season by a long way. This was good timing for the West Enders, with a proverbial six pointer against a well organised and high octane Edinburgh University side.

The first half started at a frenetic pace with both teams intent on getting the upper hand in the opening exchanges. Hillhead just about edged the opening quarter of the game with some half chances bouncing the wrong way. The remainder of the half was more keenly contested, however, had it not been for keeper Jamie Frail Hillhead would undoubtedly be at least a goal down at halftime. An onlooker may have passed off his saves as routine, but his team mates were only to aware of his astute positioning and stunning reactions when called upon. On current form he will continue to improve which is remarkable.

Halftime Hillhead 0 - 0 Edinburgh University

Hillhead buoyed by a competitiveness in the first half that had been lacking in their four previous league matches, took to the field determined to give the home support the result they were cheering for. The second half was a bit "off the cuff" by Hillhead with Edinburgh University stretching them more effectively. This suited Hillhead somewhat but some cheap turnovers whilst in great attacking positions left Hillhead frustrated. As the game wore on it seemed like Hillhead's dominance would not be rewarded despite an electrifying performance by Graeme Campbell who effortlessly beat the uni defence with every possession. Problem was that our players could not run fast enough to set up 2 v. 1s! Not the worst problem to have. With five minutes remaining Hillhead looked to have sealed the points, only for Johnny Horn to deflect onto the post. Within sixty seconds Edinburgh University missed from a foot out in what would have been a cruel twist. Hillhead's perseverance and effort was duly rewarded with two minutes on the clock with the outstanding Campbell turning a Uni defender inside out before powering a shot low at the keepers feet. The keeper who had been steady lost concentration and let the ball dribble through his feet. The next second is unclear. Did Johnny Horn touch it in or did Campbell's initial shot sneak in? Frankly, who cares! Hillhead had the goal they so deserved. With two minutes to go Hillhead got everyone behind the ball to see off a hard fought and vital win.

Well done to coach Joss for keeping faith in the squad through trying times. It is greatly appreciated by all in the squad and beyond.

Fulltime Hillhead 1 - 0 Edinburgh University

Some 'cats have 10 lives!

Saturday's rip-roaring win over Edinburgh University seemed to be the turning point for AMN Hillhead Men's 1's so far this season, in a weekend of drama that nearly turned into melodrama and downright farce!

Western Wildcats and Hillhead served up a game that had just about everything that National 1 has to offer on a weekly basis these days; good hockey, dreadful hockey, fantastic hockey, professional fouls, goals, celebrations and of course both umpires being shouted at regularly. Come on! Lets be honest here! The vast majority of National 1 players do give umpires a hard time, whether they win, draw or lose!

The "drama" of this day - certainly for Hillhead - was the penalty stroke awarded to the 'Cats in the last minute of the game.

Whether it was an easy call or not, for umpire Gordon McColl, it was most definitely a brave one, and to be fair, he got it spot on. And he followed it up with a yellow card that had to be given under the circumstances.

Despite the severe disappointment of the decision given, and the subsequent three points gained for the 'Cats, as Scott McCartney sent it high into the goal, all credit to the Hillhead players who ultimately kept their heads. It was a real blow to the proverbial gut, after what had been a fantastic second half performance - and nobody could have felt the pain more than Hillhead's number one goalkeeper, Jamie Frail. For goodness sake - only seconds before the PF was awarded, the seasoned campaigner had just pulled off a brilliant save from a penalty corner!

The first half saw Western play the better hockey. Their passing was solid and controlled and there was an air of self-assurance as they slapped the ball around the back through David Mansouri, when there was a shortage of options further up the field.

AMN Hillhead did start the game in lively fashion, and for the first 10 minutes or so, had many an attack into the heart of the Cats' defence. Indeed, Wildcats keeper, Somerville, pulled off a fantasic save from a Hillhead penalty corner that seemed destined for the top corner.

In open play Hillhead had a number of options up front, including rolling subs Chris Wilson and James Ross. But their fitness and speed fell victim and foul of wasted balls!

In the first period, and in particular that first 10 minutes of attacking "into the heart of the Cats' defence", Hillhead's final ball was lacking. A number of would be great, weighted through balls, had simply too much weight behind them! With players such as Wison, Ross and Andy Maclaine scurrying to the baseline to try and catch the ball, it soon became an all round frustration for a team that hates making such basic mistakes.

And unfortunately for the HHC boys, that and other frustrations saw them sinking back into their own half for the rest of the first period. And Western, still pushing forward, capitalised on their pressure and took a deserved 1-0 lead.

The second half was a whole different affair and Hillhead came out all guns blazing and started playing the way they'd played when they finished Edinburgh Uni off the day before.

All of a sudden there was that sense of urgency and more self awareness of how important every goal and point is, in this league that throws up so many unexpected results. The Wildcats themselves had lost heavily here at home against Grove Menzieshill only three weeks ago, but had come back well since, winning important games. They weren't about to give up a one goal lead easily.

Only a few short minutes in though, Hillhead got back into this crucial game with a superb Graeme Campbell solo run that found him going past the helpless sweeper and slotting it easily beyond the keeper. Hillhead kept the pressure on with some fantastic build up play thanks to some through balls from Graeme Campbell, Andrew Hilton and Alan Meikle, that were a joy to watch.

However, none of this stopped Western, who were on the back foot at this point, from counter attacking, and they got another goal putting them back in the lead and taking the score to 2-1. It was against the run of play, but goals make prizes make points! But Hillhead's heads didn't go down and they continued on their mission of an excellent passing game.

Both Graeme Campbell and Alan Meikle were dazzling in their play the day before, and at 2-1 down in this game, they were more determined than ever to equalise and then go on to win.

Graeme Campbell is deadly in any game of hockey taking place in this country, if he's given even the slightest bit of space. His sheer speed and skill is a joy to behold and easily deserving in the national side on capability alone. He's one of the best players in the country. That doesn't mean he should walk straight into the Scotland set up; it doesn't work like that and he knows that. But regardless of protocol and invitation he's still one of the best players in the country, period!

Alan Meikle is the veteran of this AMN Hillhead 1's side having started his hockey in the 1's back in 1995 as a school boy. He hasn't changed a bit and is the mouthpiece of the team. Yep, he's definitely volatile and always has been, and it's the one constant in his game that drives him - and others around him - forward. In fact, if you put a muzzle on the man he wouldn't be able to play! He needs to talk and shout to everyone around him, and it's all for the good of his team mates, and he intends it that way.

After Western took that 2-1 lead, Meikle was in his element, and alongside captain Andrew Hilton, was now really rallying the troops! And the "troops" weren't doing to bad either as the whole team strived to get back into this game again, and get a vital equaliser. Hillhead had so much of the pressure using the wide men to great effect. Finally that pressure paid off with a penalty corner buried by Paul Crooks - 2-2!

With time running out fast a draw was looking like a fair result for both teams, but lets not forget about the Wildcats who were still driving forward too, on the counter attack. A draw probably would have been a fair result, but fairness has nothing to do with a team's desire to win and a team's desire to hang in there. At 2-2 both teams wanted to win, but both teams would have happily taken a draw and a point each, with just under two minutes to go!

And what a two minutes it was, and all of it in Hillhead's circle!

First came that Wildcats' penalty corner saved brilliantly by Jamie Frail down at his right hand post! Then, with seconds on the clock, a Western player went down in the Hillhead circle!

Penalty stroke given! Yellow card given to the offending Hillhead player! Penalty stroke scored!

Western Wildcats 3 AMN Hillhead 2!

At the end of the day it had been an enthralling and entertaining game of hockey. Probably the only calm person at Auchenhowie throughout the 70 minutes was Wildcats' coach Vishal Marwaha. Very little flusters the man - and if he can can copy and manufacture his brain and mindset into a saleable package, he should punt it on to the many players within this league who get upset over next to nothing, week in week out.

Hugely disappointing day for AMN Hillhead, but Coach Keith Joss is guiding them the best possible way - and with a CV like his, they know they have to keep listening, have faith, and take it all forward from here.

FINAL SCORE: Western Wildcats 3 AMN Hillhead 2

Hillhead rock solid against men from the Granite City

After a positive weekend preeceding Hillhead's match with Gordonians, there was a greater confidence amongst coach Joss's men. Much of this was down to the fact that coach Joss was able to play the same starting XI three matches in a row. A consistency that had been lacking in the earlier part of the season. Gordonians, having been promoted as champions of NL2 had experienced more success than failure in the last 12 months. With ex international Craig Harper player/coach and a goalkeeper that has flirted with the international set up, they had some real quality in their ranks. With the early indications suggesting that both Hillhead and Gordonians would fail to make the split, the match took on the feel of an early season relegation tussle, albeit not terminal at this stage. The proverbial six pointer!

Hillhead began the match quickly and pinned the Northerners deep into their defensive half for large spells of the first quarter of the match. Had it not been for two outstanding charging saves by the opposition keeper, Hillhead would have been two up within the opening ten minutes. Their positive start did prove fruitful, however, with veteran midfielder Alan Meikle flicking a rebound off the keeper after a corner strike. Hillhead continued to dominate with Gordonians failing to threaten the solid Hillhead defence. A second goal was not long in the waiting as the mercurial James Prowse stole in to lob the ball skillfully over the advancing oppositon keeper.

The second half was a closer affair, with Gordonians finding their stride and playing with a renewed vigour. Whilst their play was more positive and controlled, Hillhead still continued to create chance after chance. The home side were so dominant in possession and attack that they got caught short at the back with Gordonians winning and converting a rare penalty corner. GAME ON. The game should have been out of sight, however Hillhead now faced a nervy last 10 minutes. Sticking to what they do best Hillhead continued to play positive, high intensity hockey and were rewarded for their endeavour with sixteen year old John Reid showing great composure to restore Hillhead's two goal cushion. Five minutes to go and Hillhead seemed to be cruising once again. Only an away fan could mistake a two goal Hillhead lead with five minutes to go as a stroll to three points. Hillhead like to keep the crowd entertained for the entire match, and somehow managed to concede a most unlikely second goal to set up a nervy last 3 minutes. With NL1 seemingly closer than ever, Hillhead held strong and won an invaluable three points which moved them up to 6th in the league.

Fulltime Hillhead 3 - 2 Gordonians

Captain Andrew Hilton looks to HIGH-FIVE scorer of Hillhead's third goal, John Reid!

Hillhead's Young and Old lock horns in Indoor Thriller

Saturday served up one of the most intriguing Hillhead encounters of their recent history. With Hillhead 2s a team made up of National League based players and under 15s and Hillhead 3s, a mixture of over 55s and some indoor novices, the stage was set for a fiercely competitive tussle. Would the youngsters be overwhelmed by the guile of their wiser opponents or would the old pretenders bow to their youthful exuberance and gallus attitudes? As it happened, neither transpired. Quite the opposite, Hillhead 3s, marshalled by Graham ' Captain Mainwaring' Conkie proved to be the more energetic and relentless of the two sides. In contrast the Hillhead youngsters showed a composure and patience defying their years.

Hillhead 2s dominated the first half, limiting their older rivals to scraps, albeit generous leftovers from Alan Meikle's turkey hangover. Despite some senior players not leading by example, the youngsters took care of things in front of goal, establishing a 4-2 halftime lead. The second half was all about the old guard, as they stepped things up in search of a seemingly unlikely reversal in fortunes. This positive approach was to pay dividends as they draw level at 5-5. Hillhead 2s shocked by this dramatic overhaul, sprung into life and re-established what would prove to be a crucial two goal cushion thanks to some individual brilliance from nuisance striker Jimmy Lynch Small. Hillhead 3s scored a sixth, but ran out of time as the full time whistle denied them a deserved share of the points.

A tremendous advert for the club with players as young as 13 and as old as 61; Internationals and novices; fit and fat all sharing the one court, with a competitive edge present for all to see but always within the bounds of Hillhead's hard but fair approach to the game

Hillhead maintain status as League's Best

Going into this weekend's fixtures Hillhead's top indoor side boosted a record of six victories and one defeat, with the one defeat courtesy of a last gasp winner by title rivals Grove Menzieshill second string.

This weekend's fixtures promised to be testing affairs against Stepps, who despite their lowly league position play a good brand of indoor hockey, and against promotion rivals Aberdeen Asset.

The first match was a scrappy affair with Hillhead trailing for long spells. Injured captain Graeme Campbell roused his squad into action, and they duly delivered a 6-4 victory, albeit not the most convincing win of the season.

The second match of the day, was on paper the more difficult fixture. Again Hillhead started slowly, falling behind. Unfazed by their concession, Hillhead spring into life, playing some of the best indoor hockey they have played in years, with first touch, incisive passing tearing Aberdeen apart to the tune of five goals in a deadly four minute spell.

Halftime: Hillhead 5 - 2 Aberdeen

The second half was a much more stuffy affair as Aberdeen kept more men back to prevent a further avalanche of goals. Hillhead did however maintain their form and added another three goals, whilst only conceding one. A vintage Hillhead display, and still with the Campbell brothers to come back into the team.

Fulltime: Hillhead 8 - 3 Aberdeen

The success behind the lady who just gets on with it.

HHC man, Alan Meikle, congratulates Sheila Moodie for her superb organisation of another highly successful West District Indoor season!

Some of you will recognise this lady from her other recent success - her coaching of Monklands Hockey Club of which she was one of the co-founders only a few short years ago. Monklands formed and then entered the West District outdoor leagues, starting in Division 4, in 2007: and their success was rapid as they climbed the leagues in the space of only four seasons and won Division 1, crowning them West District Champions in 2011. Monklands then entered the National leagues where unfortunately, through no fault of Sheila's, they collapsed as a club.
Their success however, in the West District, was mostly down to Sheila Moodie's total commitment, and testament to her coaching abilities.

But Sheila's story doesn't start or finish there. She played hockey and tennis for Hillhead back in the 60's. Indeed, she was one of the best tennis players of her generation and gained several caps for Scotland. Her picture still hangs on the wall of the boardroom at Hughenden alongside ex-Hillhead hockey lady and ex-Scotland internationalist Judy Martin, and the many other internationalists spanning the last 100+ years who played for their country at various sports.
As well as hockey coaching, Sheila has also been a brilliant tennis coach down the years.

Her remit lately at West District level has been the organisation of the West District indoor on a week to week basis - and she really has done a fantastic job! It has been especially successful at the Lagoon Sports Centre in Paisley this season, and all the players from all teams have really enjoyed some great indoor hockey during the winter break from outdoor.

As the indoor season draws to a close, it's a big congratulations and thank-you to Sheila Moodie for her hard work, dedication and great organisation.

Hillhead leave it late to take the title

Hillhead went into the last weekend of the indoor season with the destiny of the division two title in their control. With only one defeat to their names, Hillhead had a great opportunity to win the league. All the more remarkable given the squad have not trained once this season. Standing in Hillhead’s way were promotion chasing Falkirk, title challengers Grove Menzieshill 2s and Inverleith 2s.

Hillhead’s title charge got off to the worst possible start with a 6-2 defeat to a calculated and savvy Falkirk side. A strange result, in which Hillhead were completely dominant, but for an outstanding goalkeeping performance and three yes three missed penalties and some lax defending. So despite the loss there was a good platform to take into the match of the day with Menzieshill.

The Menzieshill match started off poorly as Grove tore Hillhead’s half court set up to pieces, with pre planned plays reeking havoc. Within 10 minutes of the first half Hillhead were 4-1 and in serious trouble. Coach Campbell decided to change things to a 2-2-1 and Hillhead immediately settled into their stride. The comeback was on with Hillhead producing some tremendous hockey to win an enthralling encounter 8-5. The title dream was back on track, just a routine win against already relegated Inverleith 2s would settle thinsg. Aye right! As if Hillhead do things the easy way.

Hillhead were behind five times in the match, but showed a spirit and determination akin to Ferguson’s Manchester United, and stole a dramatic and gutsy 6-5 victory with seconds on the clock. A wonderful fight by a relatively new squad saw Hillhead seal a title winning return to the top eight.

Defeat does not spell disaster for Hillhead

With the indoor season successfully negotiated attention has now turned to preparing for the second half of the outdoor campaign. With Ewan Campbell and Iain Hilton returning from injury the squad is at full strength, other than Paul Crooks who is currently on a sabbatical from hockey.

Last Sunday the boys played Uddingston, currently fourth in NL2 and coached by ex Hillhead star Steven Percy. With key Steven Pollock, Andrew Hilton, Iain Hilton and Graeme Campbell all missing this was an opportunity for other squad players to claim a stake for a starting position come league time.

The game was not the most attractive, with Hillhead second best in a miserable first half with Uddingston scoring neatly from two penalty corners. A deserved lead, albeit Hillhead had not entered the fray. The second half was a much more competitive affair with Hillhead thawing after a cold first half. They grabbed a consolation goal with the last touch of the match with Chris Wilson finishing well after a corner switch.

Final Score Uddingston 2 - 1 Hillhead

Clinical Kelburne too good for battling Hillhead

With two previous failed attempts to play the Scottish champions due to inclement weather, it was a relief to finally have the chance to challenege ourselves against the best players in the country. In the past Hillhead would have cowered at such a challenge, but now the squad relishes the chance to test themselves against the best. After all without Kelburne where would Hillhead and Scottish Hockey be? Dwelling in mediocraty I believe. They are a tour de force and set the bar for all around them.

Man for man, comparing the two squads the mismatch is alarming and really evokes the David and Goliath fable. Kelburne only had one player that had not represented Scotland at some level and he was Irish, whereas Hillhead had three players that had played for Scotland at youth level. So strong is the Kelburne squad that they can have international players warming the bench.

Realising how important a good start and positive attitude is, Hillhead started the match well and took an early lead after a sweeping move saw Hillhead awarded a penalty which Andrew Hilton nervelessly dispatched. Unfortunately this kicked Kelburne into life with four goals establishing a comfortable halftime lead. The second half was dominated by Kelburne, with some brave and committed defending limiting them to two more goals.

Final Score Kelburne 6 - 1 Hillhead

Hillhead youngsters win nine goal thriller

Hillhead started the match strongly, scoring from their first attack with a strike from Stephen Frame. This was followed by a precise finish from young Rory McClure who was then taken to the ground in celebration by Jamie McTaggart. Kelburne pulled one back to make it 2-1. A fantastic passage of play ended with a great ball from Rory to Jimmy Lynch Small who took it into the area and put it past keeper Lachlan Morris, who was playing his second game in the nets and was playing for Kelburne (while Hillhead had Scotland U16 keeper Alison Westwood).

After the halftime break Hillhead again came out strong scoring two more to put them 5-1 ahead with the strikes coming from Ciaran Quinn and Jimmy picking up his second. Then things began to go downhill, Kelburne pulled back two goals from short corners with their star player Fabian Goldie at the heart of their attacks. At 5-3 Hillhead should have been in command of the game but panicked allowing Kelburne to attack again and again which ended with a Kelburne striker one on one with keeper Lachlan Morris (the keepers had switched just after the start of the second half). Lachlan slid out but the striker’s skill put the ball beyond Lachlan’s reach but not his legs. The umpire awarded a penalty flick which was calmly put away by Fabian.

The score was now 5-4, but Hillhead managed to hold on for the win showing great nerve to hold the ball for the last 5 minutes. A mention must be made for the unanimously voted man of the match, Justin Geddes who had a great game with incredible work rate, running up and down the wing, putting in great tackles and clinical passes.

Overall it was a great performance from a young squad who deserved the win.

Match report by JLS

Hillhead Hockey keeping goals in sight

The last couple of months have seen Hillhead enjoying some successes on the goalkeeping front. Thanks to the committed effort of Gerry McGuinness, Hillhead Juniors now have four young keepers in training. Recently one of these young proteges, Lachlan Morris, made their senior debut, claiming an elusive clean sheet in a six nil victory for the sixth XI.

Hillhead's other rising star Alison Westwood, cunningly employed as Ali Westwood by the under 16 boy's manager, was recently selected for Scotland Under 16s. She will now represent Scotland in test matches against the mighty Holland, Germany and England.

First XI veteran keeper Jamie Frail has also been representing the club at International level, passing on his indepth knowledge of the dark art to Scotland's most promising keepers. Jamie has also been mentoring/working with a number of keepers from around the West, with Andrew Wilkie of Stirling Wanderers notoriety and Uddingston's 1st XI keeper formerly of Western Wildcats to name a few. Former keeper Neil Durno will also be looking to sharpen his game up with some guest appearances at training in the coming months.

All this goes to show that Hillhead is making positive strides in all aspects of the game and that it is a fantastic environment for hockey's forgetten men and women, girls and boys to learn their trade.

Post-Split pressure, joy and pain.

This was AMN Hillhead's first of four games in the lower half of the split in the league - from here it's the business end of survival in National 1.. Opportunities gone and chances missed, in games gone by, is probably the main reason why Hillhead find themselves in this position this season. And this game, against an equally hungry Edinburgh University hunting for valuable points, was close at times to being the classic example of the fantastic gameplay from Hillhead that, often or not, has little end game in the shape of goals scored.

Edinburgh University held on to the ball brilliantly in the first 35. At times - certainly for the first 15 minutes - they had Hillhead pinned in their own half under the direction of defender general Graham Moodie who, if given any time and space at all, was happily prepared to run at the Hillhead midfield and taunt them with some excellent through balls to a lively University midfield and forward line. Indeed, Hillhead should have been punished, and would have been, if it hadn't been for a handful of good saves from HHC keeper Jamie Frail and some excellent defensive work from Stephen Pollock, David McCandless and co.

But Hillhead gradually got more and more into the game with interchanging subs James Prowse and Chris Wilson - playing high in the lone striker's role - seeing more of the ball. For the remaining 20 minutes of the first period the balance started to tip in Hillhead's favour - but it's fair to say it wasn't overly convincing at times as passes went often to Edinburgh sticks. It was frustrating for Hillhead as they pushed more and more for a breakaway goal.

Alan Meikle was so unlucky as he got on the end of a great ball rattled into the circle - meeting it on the PF spot he deflected it just over the bar and a helpless Uni keeper! But Hillhead's growing confidence was soon rewarded - albeit inadvertently - by an own-goal deflected past the university keeper by one of his defenders. Luck was looking down on Hillhead from the cold grey sky, but by this point in the game it wouild have been unfair to say it was against the run of play. Hillhead had been pressing, so one goal to the good was satisfying to say the least, regardless of the circumstances. However, with only a few short minutes of the first half on the clock, what seemed like the inevitable, happened. Edinburgh equalised - and they deserved their long awaited goal.

Inglorious b*stards? No! How about Glorious b*stards!

What a second half! AMN Hillhead were first out of the blocks and on fire; their passing game had more accuracy and their direct attacking play - which they do brilliantly when they truly believe in themselves - was causing problems straight from the whistle. The waves of attacks from a far more aggressive Hillhead were temporarily ruined however by a second goal from the University. At 2-1 down Hillhead could have started to sink, but that minor blow just seemed to make them more determined as they stepped up their game even more. Edinburgh had been dominant for most of the first half - now it was Hillhead's turn. Those lone strikers subbing with each other - James Prowse, Chris Wilson and newly introduced James Ross - were getting far better support and better through balls from an eager five man midfield. Alan Meikle had had a quiet (ish) first half by his standards, but he was playing higher now, and alongside Graeme Campbell, the two of them worked brilliantly together pushing towards the opposition D and causing a lot of problems to a now disrupted Uni defence.

Of course they didn't get everything their own way and the counter attacking from Edinburgh was determined and constructive - and they were still leading this crucial game 2-1.

Cue forward to 10 minutes left of this now exciting game and everything changed in Hillhead's favour - and deservedly so. Penalty corner to Hillhead and Graeme Campbell deflected the strike brilliantly in to the top corner! In fairness to the diving keeper - he didn't even see it! And he'd barely picked himself up when three minutes later another penalty corner strike was deflected brilliantly in to the same corner, this time by Ewan Campbell. Suddenly from 2-1 down, Hillhead were 3-2 up and looking at three points...

Alas, those counter attacks by Edinburgh paid off with three minutes to go. Their equalising goal, whilst not completely unexpected, was a blow. Hillhead came mighty close to getting a winning goal courtesy of Matt Macintyre with seconds to go, but with all his blood rushing to his head he unfortunately made poor contact and walloped the ball straight at the keeper.

With the final whistle blowing in all ears, it's fair to say that Hillhead, after an amazing turnaround, were unlucky not to take all three points - but Edinburgh will most likely feel the same, after a competent display in the first half.

Coach Keith Joss has an impressive CV the length of an african elephant's trunk. He's got fantastic experience at the top level, including coaching the Scotland Senior Ladies. His tactics for this game were spot on. However, the essence of his message to the players was of real importance. He asked for more aggression and "metal" - "lets be bastards when competing in all areas of the park". By the end of the first half and for the entire second half, he got that winning mentality. That's what he meant and wanted from all players, nothing else.

It was, eventually, a great performance from all players - and with three games left, AMN Hillhead 1's know what's required to say in the top flight of Scottish hockey.

Inglorious bastards don't win National 1 or even stay there. Glorious bastards on the other hand...

FINAL SCORE: Edinburgh University 1's 3 AMN Hillhead 1's 3

Gary steps up to the Plate and now has his sights set on Hillhead 2's!

Fidra Lions defeated Anchor 2-1 today in the Men's District Plate quarter-final, after a penalty stroke shoot-out.

It was a superb win and sets up a great semi-final between AMN Hillhead 2's and the Lions, who Hillhead Men's Hockey Club know well.

For the last couple of seasons Fidra Lions have hosted a Hillhead Veterans/Junior squad - run by Hillhead's Ian B Wilson - down at Inverclyde (Largs), for a pre-season weekend of friendlies and training. Both weekends, that also saw Uddingston and Irvine playing, were very successful, and this annual fixture is definitely set to continue.

Fidra Lions are a very new club (two men's teams, one ladies team) who started in 2008 and are based in North Berwick on the east coast, just down from Edinburgh. There are three small islands just off that coast; the Bass Rock, Craigleith, and Fidra - and yep, you guessed it, the Lions are named after the latter.

The Lions have one of the best coaches (possibly one of the best kept secrets?) in Scottish hockey - Gary Wright.

Head Coach Gary has an impressive CV, including coaching Edinburgh University Ladies, Scotland Men's O55's and the very successful East District Girls U18's squad who won the Scottish District title last September, on finals day at Peffermill.

With the Fidra Lions he has transformed - with the help of a handful of experienced veterans - a squad of youngsters and newbies, into two, well drilled men's teams.

He also plays a mean game himself, running Fidra Lions 1's from a central midfield role.

AMN Hillhead 2's will be tough opposition for the Lions, but the semi-final on Sunday the 21st of April has the ingredients to throw up a fascinating show-down between two connected clubs.

Hillhead halt CALA development plans

With a difficult season now well and truly at the business end, Hillhead on Saturday had four league matches in which to pick up enough points to avoid an unlikely relegation.

Today's opponents were CALA Edinburgh who were bottom of the table with three points. In their previous encounter this season Hillhead prevailed 3-2 winners. The team that took to the turf at Jordanhill today was almost unrecognisable from those victors.

After a positive start in which Hillhead signalled their intent from the outset, an opening goal arrived within the opening five minutes. The rest of the match was a procession of goals with Jamie McTaggart and Ash Perman grabbing double braces. Other scores were Chris Wilson, Gregor Campbell and an Irish man who will remain nameless.

Full time. Hillhead 15. - 0 CALA

AMN Hillhead dish up a lukewarm Plate

Good performance by AMN Hillhead 1's in the first half of this semi-final Plate game on Saturday through at Peffermill - including two goals..

The second half in all honesty was frankly lamentable from a team that went completely quiet - probably in disbelief at their own performance, that seemed to disintegrate in front of their eyes - and sticks!
Lets not take anything away from Granite City Wanderers though, they had a reasonably good first half against a dominant Hillhead team who were piling on the pressure.

The second half, however, was a completely different Granite City! They came out all guns firing and played some really great hockey. And it paid off. From 2-0 down they got back to 2-2 and then went 3-2 up. Brilliant stuff!

Hillhead, although not good in the second half, never looked out of it in fairness. And it was regular 4's player Ger Barrett who, after chasing what seemed like a loose ball destined to cross the baseline with 3 minutes of the 70 to go, caught that ball and slipped it to James Ross who drove into the circle and knocked it off a defenders foot. Penalty corner awarded - penalty corner scored!

Final score 3-3. The PF shoot-out that followed has to be one of the longest in history!

AMN Hillhead won the game 16-15 on PF's. So, final score: AMN Hillhead 19 Granite City 18. [Peffermill 20/4/2013]

AMN Hillhead 1's did have a weakened side out due to the all-important National 1 game against Inverleith yesterday (Sunday). With players being rested, coach Keith Joss brought in youngster Jimmy Lynch-Small and 4's regular, Ger Barrett. They both gave it everything and, despite getting very little game-time, were pretty effective. Jimmy Lynch Small played very high and ran constantly from left to right pulling the Granite City defence well wide - and he came very close to scoring in the first half. Ger Barrett's dogged determination won that penalty corner scored with three minutes to go in normal time. Job extremely well done by both players!

Finally, a word for Hillhead's old friend and ex-member - Granite City keeper, Neil Durno. He was so unlucky to be the losing keeper in the marathon PF shoot-out. All the best to Neil and the Granite City Wanderers lads. And congratulations to AMN Hillhead.

He's played most of his season in the 4's, but on Saturday, Ger Barrett got a few minutes with the 1's and proved to be very productive with what little time he had. (Photography by Andy Lovat)

There is no "i" in Hillhead

With a strong squad gathered in changing room 4B at Peffermill and with Hillhead's other two finalists, relaxing as Plate champions, the pressure was on the 2nd XI. Opinions were offered, laughs shared and nerves allayed as club stalwart and Hillhead self proclaimed most successful captain ever Stuart McGregor shared just "one" thought. With his peers listening intently, Stuart uttered the now immortal words, " there is no i in Hillhead". With everyone other than a confused Gregor Campbell and Rory Kerr in hysterics at this classic slip up, Stuart smiled mischievously like the good sport he is. As funny as it was it certainly eased the nerves of some of the less experienced members if the squad. The match started well for Hillhead as they dominated the opening exchanges. They duly took the lead with Ash Perman on hand to despatch a rebound into the Aberdeen net. Their lead was short lived however, with Hillhead's defence ripped open. Hillhead created many more chances but had to wait until the last play of the half to re establish a lead, Johnny Horn sending a screamer of a drag flick past the hapless Aberdeen keeper. Halftime Hillhead 2. - 1. Aberdeen GSFP The second half was less dominant for Hillhead as they lost sight of the standard of play required to cause their opponents difficulties. They began to play for themselves and lost their rhythm as the half progressed. Aberdeen were rewarded for their doggedness with an equaliser with fifteen minutes on the clock. With the game well and truly in the balance and Hillhead regretting their poor returns in attack, Alan Meikle popped up and caught the Aberdeen defence napping, scoring from a tight angle to give Hillhead the lead once again. Hillhead stood strong and held on to complete the plate treble. Hillhead. 3. - 2. Aberdeen GSFP

Hillhead ready for pivotal play-off encounter

You have to go back about eighteen years for the last encounter between Hillhead 1st XI and Uddingston 1st XI. So much has changed since then for both teams, with players coming and going, relegations and promotions to boot. As a young, precocious 15 year old, Uddingston away was not a fixture to look forward to, as they brought a physical, combative edge to their play. With the Bell brothers and the towering Scott Baird mainstays in their team, they had quality in abundance. They, however, have hung up their sticks and moved to the dark art of umpiring and judging, in which they have excelled. It is with some satisfaction that we see Fraser Bell progress, as he was one of the most talented players of his peers group in the country. Whilst Hillhead's progress up the leagues has been more speedy, Uddingston have recently set the foundations for a bright future whether they make it to National One or not. They have to be credited for their commitment to youth development, self publicity and general club values. Ex Hillhead player and hugely popular Steven Percy has been at the heart of this revolution, blending his natural ability for the game with a tactical nous and experience more befitting of someone more senior in years. The addition of the very compotent Laurie McKelvie and the Cairn brothers also gives the team an added dimension. But let's not forget the guys that have been there since the beginning, enduring more difficult times. Nairn Scobie, Martin Lorimer and David Goodfellow to name but a few. It is these guys that are the foundation of a club in the longer term. Sunday is sure to serve up a fierce battle between two sides keen to avoid the indignation of NL2. Win or lose, Hillhead will rest assured give the match their best efforts. Before the heat of the match takes hold of player's emotions, Hillhead would like to wish Uddingston all the best on the day and hope for a match embodied by respect, sportsmanship and passion.

The Art of Survival

As National 1/2 play-off games go, this game had to be one of the most exciting and eagerly anticipated games in years.

Both sides had a big support there. Indeed, McWhinney Uddingston even hired a proper make of bus for their fans - a Van Hool no less! For those of you not up to speed (pun not intended) on your make of bus, well, let's just say, that newly retired Sir Alex - and his teams - has been stepping on and off that make of bus for years. Very posh.

And as both sets of fans got the stand warmed up with their banter and spirited noise, deep underneath in the bowels of this seething cauldron, a pre-match intimidation game had already begun.

As the Hillhead lads sat in their changing room, 10 feet away in the opposition's changing room, Fat Boy Slim had both decks pumping, bumping and grinding! The music certainly sounded good from the Uddy "ghetto blaster", but unfortunately it was so loud, nobody within a 10 mile radius could make out exactly what it was. Were the mighty Uddy trying to smoke Hillhead out of their changing room...or just lock them in there with a wall of noise? Either way, both teams did leave for the field of play: both teams were "pumped" in their different ways, both teams were most definitely ready!

If the actual game had been anything like the build-up in the days leading up to it, it would have been a classic, technically. But it definitely wasn't - and lets be honest, most didn't think it would be.

That old and often overused cliche, "a scrappy affair", kicked in for both teams from minute one, through the sheer jangling nerves from just about every player. Pitch number 1 at Peffermill isn't the best of surfaces now. It looks great, but it's become ever so slightly uneven and therefore bouncy - and that proved a problem for both sides as quite a number of players simply missed the ball when trying to stop it.

Hillhead probably had more possession in the first half, but when Uddingston got the ball they were far more productive with it. And one of the best moves of the entire game was a through pass to striker/frontman Tom Hyndman who had a clear shot on goal and missed. It was a real chance to take an early(ish) lead, and Hyndman must be kicking himself - but in fairness to the man, it was that kind of game - the blood was rushing to most players' heads, as they frantically went "all-out" in this all-important one off game.

Uddingston had another great chance - an opportunist goal-scorer's chance - to put the ball away from close range, but HHC's Jamie Frail saved it brilliantly, deflecting it wide with his glove.

Uddingston's Laurie McKelvie never put a foot wrong the entire game, and it was his constant diligence - in his endeavour to make the correct pass - that got this game it's first goal. His excellent through ball set up Player/Coach Steven Percy, who scored a cracker from the top of Hillhead's D with his reverse stick. There was little the highly experienced Jamie Frail could do about this one. Game on - as they say!

AMN Hillhead kept pressing though and had their chances too. Alan Meikle came so close with his own reverse stick shot from the edge of Uddingston's D, but it was deflected over the bar by an Uddy stick. Hillhead had three penalty corners in the first half - the second one was well saved by the Uddingston keeper, but the third one, not long from half-time, was Hillhead's breakthrough. The original shot from the edge of the circle broke down - the ball rebounded to push-out man Alan Meikle, who was close to the baseline on the left, and he cracked it from an acute angle low past the keeper. It was a brilliant goal, and it was a goal that was desperately required before half-time.

That Meikle goal was what Hillhead obviously needed, and it really spurred them on for the second half - and it showed, as they started to play far more fluent and connected hockey.

The ball was being missed less, their passing game ramped up a little bit closer to the standard they know they can provide for each other as a team on any other given day. They were being buoyed, bolstered and encouraged, by the always motivated Andrew Hilton in the centre of the park. The team visibly took the game higher up the park and put far more pressure on the Uddingston defence.

Graeme Campbell, who in the run up to the game had been carrying an injury and was "under the weather", came far more into the game in the second half. When he gets on those super-fast-direct runs he's one of the best players in the land. In the first half he quite literally - and frustratingly for himself - left the ball behind him, but now he was taking that little yellow ball with him, and taking his game to the opposition.

Uddingston are a young team mostly, but they've got longer serving experienced players in their ranks too.

These Uddy "originals" - the guys who have been around Uddingston for a while - know how to dig-in and change tactics against certain opposition when the going gets tough.

Captain Nairn Scobie, Martin Lorimer and David Goodfellow did just that under increasing pressure from six-years-in-National 1 Hillhead. All the money in the world can't buy the vital experience that players like these guys have got. All three had a great game under the high tension circumstances. Nairn Scobie has been around a long, long time. His composure on the ball was superb; and as a captain under pressure on the day, he stuck to his important job whilst doing everything in his power to rally the younger troops. Meanwhile, player/coach Steven Percy, who had given it everything in the first half, was now looking tired in the second half, and understandably so.

Hillhead created far more chances in front of goal in the second half - and one of their best chances fell to Ewan Campbell who rushed in from the left and towards the oncoming keeper, only to lob it just over the bar. But in fairness to Campbell - like Uddingston's Hyndman in the first half, the whole pressure-pot of the occasion will have got the better of him, even if he didn't realise it himself!

However, it was the man who had scored Hillhead's equaliser in the first half who made the real difference with five minutes to go.

Alan Meikle had had to go off the park half way through the second half with an injury to his eye. He had to go off and get it patched up. There was no guarantee that he'd make it back on. But he did come back on with that five minutes to go.

And with a TWO minutes to go he produced a piece of magic that changed absolutely everything! Receiving the ball just wide and off the keeper's left post, he scooped it brilliantly over the man in the pads and towards the goal - it was then helped over the line by Graeme Campbell to score Hillhead's winning goal!

It was high drama to end an incredible game, an incredible day, and an incredibly exciting and tense week.

It would be equally and incredibly patronising to McWhinney Uddingston, however, to tell them how unlucky they were. The devastation of it all was written across all of their faces after the final whistle sounded, only two minutes after Hillhead's goal.

Will they come back from this? Of course they will. Will they make National1 at the end of next season? Well they should. But that will depend on their priorities and the priorities of certain players.

Coach Steven Percy is a great player. As a certain ex-Western I's player from a very successful 90's Western 1's team pointed out on Sunday night after the game, "You don't play in the Wildcats midfield in recent times unless you're damn good". That's the club, team and position, Steven Percy was playing for only very recently. He's played for Hillhead on two seperate occasions as well, and had a short-lived stint at Kelburne in between. He's also coached/played in Holland. So, it's completely fair to say, that the man is a nomad who's constantly on the look out for something better. But surely he'll now give Uddingston some long-term loyalty after the rapid progression that's taken place in the last few months - because that's what they'll especially want, and need right now.

And as far as a couple of the younger "big name signings" who have recently gone to Uddingston? Well, excuse the cynicism, but quite frankly, time will tell if they're still "up for it", even in the next few weeks...

One things for sure, the likes of McKelvie, Lorimer, Goodfellow and the ever-green Nairn Scobie, will be completely up for next season already! All power to them. All power to their loyalty to their club. With that experience and loyalty, combined hopefully with the correct "club ethos" established by their forefathers, Uddingston Men's 1's can be confident of a future in the top flight, soon.

AMN Hillhead Men's 1's meanwhile, stay in National 1 and that is where they definitely belong. It was definitely a tight game and they left it late, but there was never really any doubt in their minds they could do it. But it's all about the future now - and as Hillhead 1's Captain Andrew Hilton announced after the game - "We should never let ourselves get in this position again!"

He's absolutely right - AMN Hillhead should not be letting themselves get in that position again.

FINAL SCORE: AMN Hillhead Men's 1's 2 McWhinney Uddingston Men's 1's 1 [Peffermill - 12/05/2013]
